17 days in Italy
Fri, 11/11/2011 - 08:55
Hello guys,
I’ve a return flight to Rome from Sydney in late Dec to Jan for 17 days. My initial plan was to do a whirlwind trip of Europe. But, I’ve now decided that I really just want to relax and chill in Europe. So, I’ll just be backpacking around Italy for 17 days. I don’t want to over or under plan things, and generally like to take things as they come when it comes to travelling.
My current plan is: Rome – Venice – Florence – Naples. I’m planning about 4 days in all places, except 2 days in Venice. I still have 3 more days to spare. Anywhere else I should be going? Or, which place should I be spending more than 4 days?
I actually really want to visit Granada but that’s at the other end in Spain. Just wondering if it’s worth it to take a flight there and back to Rome for me to take the flight back to Sydney.
I would appreciate any advice! Time is actually running out
I am traveling for 31 days

I would skip Naples — not really much to see of do there. Instead think about Cinque Terra — awesomely beautiful region. I LOVE Granada, but it would be kind of a pain in the butt to fly there.

Yeah, if there were cheap direct flights between Granada and any of those Italian cities I’d say go for it, but the cheaper itineraries I see (roughly $200-$230) all include at least one long layover resulting in a 12 hour trip. Shortest I see is about 5 hours and $350 flying from Rome to Granada, Granada to Venice transferring in Madrid.
If you’re looking to relax, I think mim’s suggestion of Cinque Terre is good if you don’t mind it not being sunny and warm and somewhat closed up for the season while you’re there (which I think could be interesting since I’ve been there in May):

I’d keep Naples. You could spend a day visiting Capri, a day visiting Pompeii (and if you really like that sort of thing, a day visiting Herculaneum, a city that suffered the same fate), and visit the museum where the actual artifacts from Pompeii are displayed. I’m an opera buff, so we had to see the famed opera house. And the food is quite good; I’m told pizza was invented there.
I would add another day in Rome because there is so much to see and do there. At least two days in Venice is good, because it is very different in the evening after all the tour ships have departed. Cinque Terre is nice. Many people like to visit nearby Pisa from Florence, but all that is there is the tower and an impressive cathedral; it makes a nice half-day excursion. From Florence you can also get to Fiesole for lunch or dinner and a nice view using the municipal bus line.
Madrid, Toledo
Dublin, Dingle, Dublin
Bruges, Ardennes, Bastogne, Brussels
Thanks guys! I think I will just keep Granada for the next trip.
I had a look at Cinque Terre. That place looks really nice. For Naples, and Cinque Terre, how many days would be sufficient?
Once I get the days sorted out, I can finally book the train and accommodation.
yay!
Sorry guys, quick question again:
I was just reading the news, and realised disaster struck much of Cinque Terre (particulary Vernazza) in late October. I heard Riomaggiore, Corniglia and Manarola are still fine, just not Vernazza and Monterosso. Can anyone who is in the region or just been there confirm this please?
Is it still advisable to head there?
Many thanks
I don’t have first-hand information.
Transportation may be limited there.
For sure I would stay away from Vernazza and Monterroso.
Just wanna say thank you to everyone who helped me with my questions! It was the best trip I ever had, even though I was travelling alone.
Glad you had a good trip!
I’m so glad you had such a good time!
Awesome! Glad you had a great time. Now time to start planning the next trip, right

Indeed! I’m thinking of a one month in Europe sometime this year!
