2week trip needs a little help
Sun, 02/19/2012 - 00:21
Ok so my friends and I are planning on spending two weeks in Europe and have a kick ass time. Unfortunately we’re facing a slight snag in determining where we want to go. We’d really like this done though so that we can book tickets and hostels which would ensure the badassness of the trip. Not only do we have to choose some cities (though we have narrowed it down to specific regions) we also have to cancel one of the destinations. Here is the list of places that we have to choose from, it would be really cool if you guys suggested which city to cancel as well as which city to pick per region. please keep in mind that we would like a healthy mix of seeing pretty stuff and partying.
Barcelona (can not remove)
Southern France (we were thinking Marseilles or Nice)
Northern Italy (we were thinking Milan, Venice, or Turin)
Western Germany (we were thinking Munich or Cologne)
Paris (can not be removed)
Amsterdam (can not be removed)
I am traveling for 19 days
Barcelona, Nice, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels

Hi twoweek,
Some constructive criticism:
Of course, where you want to go and where you end up going is entirely your choice, but in my opinion, you’re doing the same thing most newbies do. You just looked at a map, and picked big cities. It would be a mistake to forego rural areas…even highly-touristed rural areas…and sticking only to big cities, especially considering how easy it is to visit at least some rural areas in Europe.
Now most of the cities you picked are, IMO, excellent cities. Paris, Amsterdam, and Barcelona are all worthwhile.
Regarding northern Italy, most people will tell you to skip Milan. I personally wouldn’t tell you to completely avoid it, but I wouldn’t prioritize it. Depending on how much time you have, you can visit Bologna instead. Or you can slightly deviate into central Italy and visit Florence (with some day trips from Florence into smaller Tuscan towns), or stay in the Umbria region for a few days. All depending on how much time you have in Italy, you might want to do a bit more research. Try browsing past threads here at Eurotrip to get an idea of other people’s itineraries and suggestions made.
Regarding France…Marseille doesn’t get a lot of love around here, but I think it’s highly worth checking out. Depending on the time of year, however, you may want to focus more on the countryside or seaside towns; and because your itinerary is almost entirely big cities, I would say for your sake, you should consider forgoing Marseille if you’ll be traveling in late spring, summer, or early fall. I wouldn’t even stay in Nice, which is also a large-ish city. I would highly suggest checking out smaller cities like Arles, Avignon, or Nîmes (and from Nîmes, you can check out a lovely coastal town called Sète), and/or pick a smaller town on the Côte d’Azur to stay in for a few days, like Antibes, and visit Cannes, Eze, or even Nice as daytrip(s).

Hi there,
I know Paris is not to be removed, but I just wanted to say I have only had bad experiences with people in Paris. Marseilles is not among my favorites either, but Nice is beautiful! All destinations are amazing, but if I were you, maybe I would skip one part of the France trip.
Munich or Cologne are absolute musts – or any part of the country for that matter. Just read some SPAM REMOVED and you will understand. The same is true with Amsterdam and and Italy!
Have fun on your Badass trip!
Twoweek,
Pay no attention to Lidia. Clearly she’s a troll.
It would be helpful to hear details about these “bad experiences with people in Paris”. But as a former Parisian, I’ll tell you first hand: it’s one of the greatest cities in the world ..and yes the people are great, but I did used to run into rude and arrogant tourists a lot during the warmer months.
