I don’t know what to tell you, sammo, other than to beware the generic, too-good-to-be-true sounding ads on Craigslist and Expatriates dot com. Some of them are so obviously scams. This I learned from house-hunting in Denmark-which has little relevance for Belgium, I know—but might save you some hassles.

Hello Don, I am getting a lot of residential accomodation over email and all of them seem to be out of London. However they all want money to be wire transfered before they come to Belgium to show me the location.
 
I keep on telling them that I want to see the accomodation but they insist on payment.
 
Is this what you call a sham?
 
In any case, I am being replaced here so I will return. I was still hoping to get my replacement her accomodation.
 

They want you to wire money? To a Western Union account? This is their MO. I would be extremely cautious and skeptical about that. Most conscientious (sp?) landlords would leave a key with a trusted neighbor or friend to show the flat in their absence. If not, this can be dropped in the mail to them, so they could arrange to show it to you locally. I wouldn’t send any money for a “landlord’s” lack of planning in being able to show their property. Did they give you a physical address for it? So you can drop by, look in the windows, talk to the neighbors at least? Send you some digital pictures of it via email? Maybe your best bet is to contact a local rentals agent in Belgium.

I am not sure, but they are sending me a physical address along with pictures and details on accomodation.
 
But they all have one thing in common: 1) they all have London telephone numbers. 2) Nice decorated apartment 3) Quite reasonably priced 4) Do not answer your question directly 5) No showing apartment untill they recieve the money.
 
I havn’t read any scams on these kind of things but today a real estate agent was explaining me on scams going on.
