Hello all !
2 of us are planning a 4 day short haul in Scotland – first time in uk ( so no clue as of now ) . Our base is Liverpool and we are planning to do a couple of days in edinburgh. I am keen to also go and see the St Andrews golf course ( and also play a round if possible ! ) . Also , would like to go to the highlands and see a couple of distilaries if possible … Is it expecting a bit too much ? Would like your suggestions and thoughts here please . This we plan to do in end september . In case this is possible , how would you advise we move around in Scotland ? ( take a train from Liverpool to the highlands and then on road or go to edinburgh and then move around ? ) Thoughts and suggestions welcome !

Thanks !

DHIR

We rented a car. On a previous trip, I took the night train from London. I would think you could do that from Liverpool. And I am sure there is a bus to St Andrews from Edinburgh.
I wonder if it might work for you to check out MacBackpackers? I know someone who did this and it worked for her. Just an idea, I certainly understand if you would prefer to travel independently.
There are many distilleries to choose from. We went to Edradour in Pitlochry—loved it. There is a hostel there.
I would maybe consider taking a day of northwest England and adding it to Scotland, but that’s just my opinion.

Thanks Cil for your comments and suggestions . I tried the site , but some how the dates are not working out . Would you know some distilleries which are pretty good near Edinburgh ( how far is Pitlochry? Adding a day to scotland is definitely a good idea – am trying to work it out and also ensure we dont miss that liverpool football match Smile

Thanks

I don’t blame you for not wanting to miss that football match! Smile
I am not a whisky expert but no doubt there are lowland distilleries.
Perhaps not quite the same, though?
You can get to Pitlochry by bus or train from Edinburgh.
There is golf there too but not sure if it’s private or how that works (I am not a golfer.)
We almost went to this distillery, Dalwhinnie, which is also reachable from Edinburgh by train.
Edradour is kind of on the outskirts of town, and I would not be surprised if Dalwhinnie is a bit of a walk as well.

Thanks Cil for your comments – will check out these recommendations . Here is what we have planned as of now
1) Go to Edinburgh from Liverpool by bus ( megabus I believe is a good option to book these)
2) Stay in Edinburgh for a day and a half .
3) Hire a car
4) Drive to St Andrews , Inverness , Fort Williams over the next 2 days ( do a distillery here on the way – any recommendations of a good one on this route ? )
5) Drop the car at Fort William
6) Take a bus from Fort Williams back to Liverpool

Is this doable ? Can we hire car from one location and drop it off in another location ? Is there a connect from Fort William to Liverpool by bus ?

Would be grateful if someone could give in their recommendations here …

Ft William is quite far away from Edinburgh—and REALLY far from Liverpool.
About Inverness, Ft Williams, and distillery: This is all still doable, but I am not sure two days covers it.
You can get the car at one destination and drop it off at another, sometimes there is a fee but not too bad.
I wonder if you should just take the train all the way to Ft Williams (it is very scenic) and then work your way back by hired car, seeing Inverness, going to a distillery etc and then finish up your Scotland visit in Edinburgh. You could do St Andrews as a part of your time in Edinburgh.
