I’d say have a look on travelsupermarket for accomodation and details, (location maps, reviews etc) and for an itinerary, I’d recommend, vatican city (paricularly the sistine chapel), shopping in Milan, Pisa (leaning tower), the Colosseum, Various art museums (Carravagio, Michelangelo although the kids may not be too interested in this.) and try and catch a Italian seria A football game (Inter milan, a.c. milan or Roma).
