Hi There,

I did a search for Alicante and didn’t see much about it specifically, so I thought I’d start a new one…please correct me if I’m wrong though! I wanted to go to a nice beach town for a few days in the middle of my trip…I’m visiting friends in Frome/Vienna which is why it’s kind of a big triangle. Anyways, I think I’ve decided on Alicante, I was trying to pick between that and Valencia. Anybody been there that has any recommendations, or been to both and would pick one over the other? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am leaving from Toronto, ON with $3500 for 26 days

Alicante is a highly touristed beach town that has grown significantly from the original historic quarter. The historic quarter (pre-20th century) is very charming, and so are the many early-modern buildings (pre-WWII) that line the waterfront. Alicante very much has the feel of a touristy Mediterranean beach town, without being overrun by the tourists, IMO. The beaches are excellent.

Valencia city (not to be confused with the much larger Valencia region, where both Alicante and Valencia city are located) is a larger city, but worth a look.

Alicante is located on the Costa Blanca, and there’s a light rail connecting all the towns on this coast. Altea is one I’m fond of, for its pictutesque little village and views, but the beach isn’t great (pebbles and rocks instead of sand). Do make an effort to visit other Costa Blanca towns.

Great, thanks so much! That’s what I had figured, that Alicante was kind of an up-and-comer as a tourist destination. I will try to check out some of the other towns as well!

I once spent a summer in Javea on the Costa Blanca.
The area was simply gorgeous, with tall cliffs and clear blue water. There was night life too, which made it a good place to be for three months.
That was a very long time ago so I have no idea what it is like now.

I also spent time in Valencia and Alicante, both were pleasant cities.

lpgogo,

Actually, its a well-established touristy town, rather than an up-and-comer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s overrun by tourists (like Benidorm just up the coast), and that’s because it has a local population large enough to sustain the town’s Spanishness. It will have lots of foreigners, but they don’t drown out the locals.
