I will be in amsterdam and then heading to munich for oktoberfest 2010. I really dont want to waste a day (or night) sitting on a train. I don’t believe Ryanair flys the route but is it still reasonable to think I can find a cheap flight?

If you don’t wait to book until last minute, and if you are flexible, then yes it’s reasonable to think that. Both AMS and MUC are fortress hubs for their respective airlines (KLM/AirFrance and Lufthansa) so while it might be rare to find an uber-cheap flight with 1 of those 2 airlines on this route, if you don’t mind connecting 2 low-cost airlines, or taking a train to, say, Dusseldorf or Brussels to catch a flight, then you should do well overall on the price.

A quick check for you found Air Berlin for $42 USD one-way total DUS-MUC late Sept. Train from Ams. Centraal to Dus. Airport currently can be done in 2h, 16m with only 1 change, with some specials available at only 19 Euros with advance purchase.

thats great, thanks Don. While not the most convenient trip, it would be a substantial savings.
