baggage fees question
Thu, 02/04/2010 - 19:33
Hey I have a question about baggage fees. If I have a connection within the US (ie ATL-Philadelphia-Paris) when traveling to Europe, do I still have to pay the domestic baggage fee for the 1st bag (anywhere from $20-$30) even though I supposedly have 1 free checked bag to Europe? Or do they check it all the way through and use the 1 free checked bag rule throughout the different legs of the flight?
I flew last summer to Fiji from Alabama and had to pay, but we flew Continental first then had to collect and recheck our bags with Air Pacific for the LAX-Fiji flight, so Continental charged us the domestic baggage fee since we only flew them domestically during the trip.
I was told (by people with first hand experience) that British Airways will give you the 1 free bag + international weight limit (rather than charge you intra-European baggage cost and weight limit once you connect) if you are coming from overseas and connecting in London then going to elsewhere within Europe as long as both legs of the flight are bought together from BA. So basically just wondering if the major US carriers do the same thing or not… I don’t have much hope, because they seem to be stingier and stingier lately with money/charges, but curiosity compelled me to ask. I am hopefully traveling to Europe later on this year but will probably be connecting since it is cheaper than non-stop.
(PS the specific airline I am looking at currently is US airways, as they have a ~$400 one-way youth/student fare on studentuniverse I am looking at with the the ATL-Philly-Paris connection mentioned earlier… one-way b/c the trip I am hoping to make is for 7months teaching in france)

If it’s all together on one reservation, then the international baggage rules apply for feeder flights within the US.
What’s your plan if detained upon arrival, or denied boarding card before departure, to fulfill entry requirements since you will be traveling on a one-way ticket?
If I am accepted to this program, I have to obtain a work visa before leaving so I will have that in my passport and also paperwork that says I have a job waiting for me.
According to the forum for the program, many of the other people who’ve done this program have had 1 way tix and gone over without a problem, so I guess it’s fine. That is the main reason I was looking to get an idea what one-ways cost.

Yep, a visa will do the trick
. Just checking because it’s an important and potentially (very) costly issue that people don’t always think through ahead of time. Didn’t want you to come back to the forums and say “Why didn’t anyone tell me?! My trip is ruined!! …. “ sort of thing.
When do you need to travel? I can check around for you.
I’ll be traveling sometime in September, if I make the program (I’ve got pretty high hopes because the acceptance rate is around 70%, and I’m pretty qualified for it, but not trying to just assume I’ll get it either). Not sure exactly when in Sept, probably mid- to late in the month (15th or after). I’ve got a friend living in Munich so I am thinking about (if possible) maybe flying into Munich, or Frankfurt and then taking the train to Munich if that’s cheaper, to visit her because it will be around Oktoberfest and I think that’d be really fun. I might have to fly directly to France though in order to get the proper stamps in my passport for the visa thing… in that case, I guess I’ll just fly into Paris (CDG). I’m hoping to be in northern France so that’ll be fine.
Also, I’m 21 (will be 22 then) if that helps. I know I qualify for like, flights on studentuniverse and stuff like that.

In addition to PAR and MUC, I added FRA, SXB and BRU in the search.
I’d prefer 1 connection to 2… more chances for baggage to get lost and all. So probably not the AC/Icelandair flight, although that’s a great price.
I saw a similar fare on StudentUniverse for the same BA flight.
Also, a friend of mine might be doing the same program, and she’d be leaving from Chicago, so a flight that connects there might be cool too (we could fly over together).
Something to think about anyway… thanks for doing that! I won’t even know if I’m in the program for sure until April, so I wouldn’t even be able to buy it til at least then anyway.
