Hi fellow travelers,

Heading to Barcelona & Madrid in a few months and heard that train is the best form of commute. I went onto the Renfe website & found a web deal of 45 Euros in the Turista section of the train. It seems too good to be true (maybe its my jaded NYC ideology that is holding me back from purchasing the tics right away). What is the difference between the Tarifa General, the Web & Estrella tics? Can I trust that if I buy the tickets so far in advance that they will still be valid in early April? Also, there are multiple stations listed in Barcelona. Is one station more central than the others? Thanks everyone!

I’m not 100% sure what the Web & Estrella fares are other than reduced fares that are only available in limited numbers and tend to disappear as you get closer to your travel date. It’s possible the fine print includes being non-refundable or something, but I’ve booked and used a Renfe web fare in the past with no problem. Where and for what train are you seeing multiple stations listed? As far as I know, and from what I see when I search, the AVE only goes from Barcelona-Sants to Atocha in Madrid. Was it a slower train?

Sants is the main station in Barcelona. Other stations are pretty much commuter stations.

Most national rail companies only sell tickets for a specific train (date and time) 60 days in advance, but an increasing number of tickets are sold up to 90 days in advance, so I’m guessing that’s the case for your early April tickets. If I saw a good price and was sure of the date, I’d book now.

I would lok at other sites to get an idea on prices (raileurope…) and stop by a local bookstore and look up the transportation tips in the many guidebooks in Spain. They will give you great tips and ideas on pricing as well.

Stick to Renfe for your prices since they’re up to date and will be cheaper than what you’ll pay purchasing through Raileurope or other sellers that sell tickets here in the U.S.
