Basketball. I’ve never watched a whole game before. Not even on TV.
I know nothing about it, but I’ll be in Vegas next week and I have tickets to the LA Lakers pre-season friendly! I’m pretty excited about it, but I have no clue what to expect.

How long does the game take to play ? two hours ?

Do you have halves, quarters, long periods of no play ?

I’m thinking of taking a young child with me. Would that be a problem?

Really how interesting? I’m sure you’re going to love it!

Basketball’s a faced paced game and you should be well entertained. There are 4 periods and the whole game including half time, time outs etc…should take somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 hours. Gaps in play time are usually filled in by the usual: team dancers, silly audience participation etc. You can definetly take a young child, I’m sure they’d enjoy it.

Basketball is one of the few professional sports that doesn’t bore me.
It is especially exciting to see live. Enjoy!

Pro basketball is boring unless it’s the playoffs. Team play isn’t what it used to be as shown by the USA’s bronze medal. I’d recommend going to see a college team. If you want to see a pro team, watch ESPN classic to see what it used to be like.

You can take kids if you’re not courtside. The players say things that you and I can’t say in public. (Maybe this has been cleaned up.)

Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.

I agree that the NBA is boring until the 2nd half of playoff games, etc. For a newcomer, I would recommend watching NCAA (College) hoops here in the U.S. The excitement level, hustle, crowd-involvement, and atmosphere is great.

Agree that the NBA has really gone downhill over the past year, as the focus has shifted from teams to individuals (which we saw in the World Championships and Olympics). But the playoffs are still good basketball.

ColinO – did you go to the game? What was your impression.

On a completely random note, what was with Kobe changing his number from 5 to 24 this year? At least Jordan’s temporary number change had its reasons.

Kobes old number: 8 That’s how many million he had to pay his current wife in US Dollars to keep her happy for the time being, and not divorce him – taking ALL his money!

New number: 24 number of shots per half he launches.

He still has a hundred million or so.

Or do you mean bad shots? Maybe the 8 is the number of assists he has in a season.

Yeah but have you seen his wife? Not too bad of an investment if you ask me.

There are nice looking wives who will actually marry you for the kind of person you are, not your money. Not many granted.
