A group of us are planning a backpacking trip for next June (2012). We are in the process of putting together our itinerary and wanted to know how far in advance we need to book our housing arrangements, especially with regards to hostels. Thanks for any help you can give!

A month max. I don’t usually book more than a week in advance. Some of the most popular hostels in the Summer may be booked a few weeks ahead, but you will certainly not be sleeping in the street. No need to book this far in advance. The only exception would be Oktoberfest.
