Last time I was through Prague’s central stn. was 1996 and there were lots of warnings about pickpockets then. One of my buddies got his wallet lifted. But that was a long time ago, and things might have changed. I’ve been back to Prague since, but not through it’s central stn.
I see that train on Bahn.de and looking at the other train schedules, can understand why you’d want that one—depart after 7pm so counts on next day’s pass day, and about half as long as the later-departing trains that evening.
I think you’d either have to arrange with someplace that has 24h reception and let them know you’re coming in very late (or early), or look at other travel times or modes. Eurolines, for example, has a bus arriving around 6am; current advance-purchase student price looks about $25 USD. I don’t recall any 24h cafes nearby, but there might be some.
You are talking about taking the EuroNight 476 Metropol.
Well this train also conveys a sleeper car (No. 376) and a seater car (No. 375) that arrive to Prague on another train at 6:15 AM, so you can get some sleep. The extra time is added in Breclav station, where these cars stand from 23:43 till 02:00 hrs and then continue as part of fast train No. 440 to Prague, arriving at 06:15 to the Main station. So just take one of these two coaches in the train and your worries about what to do at 3 AM are over.
If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
If you only want to search train or bus connection within Czech&Slovakia and/or to neighboring countries, use www.cp.sk or www.idos.cz search engines. For domestic transport, they also show prices.
Hi papyr, can i check if we need to physically transfer to another train? As my local agent told me that there is only a direct train which reach at 3am+
Chewy05
No it’s NOT a separate train. The coach you will sleep in will be pulled off the train, wait in Breclav for two hours (with you sleeping inside) and then it will be coupled to another, later train to Prague. It’s not necessary to do this, but the railways wanted to offer some reasonable hour to arrive in Prague for people like you who travel from Budapest to Prague and not all the way to Berlin.
Tell your agent to first shut up and then CHECK THE COMPOSITION OF TRAIN, if he knows what that is and where to find it.
The train we all are talking about is the EuroNight No. 476 “Metropol”, which has this official timetable:
Budapest-Keleti pu. 19.58, Štúrovo 21.09-21.12, Bratislava hl.st. 22.34-22.50, Kúty 23.28-23.30, Břeclav 23.43-0.05, Brno hl.n. 0.36-0.38, Praha hl.n. 3.22-3.33, Děčín hl.n. 5.00-5.02, Dresden Hbf 5.46-6.15, Berlin Südkreuz 8.47-8.49, Berlin Hbf 8.54.
But it’s not the question of “when does train No. 476 reach Prague”, but “when do the coaches number 375 and 376 in that train reach Prague”.
From Budapest, train 476 carries – a 2nd class coach, a couchette coach, and 2 sleeper coaches from Budapest to Berlin (goes through Prague at 3.11-3.22 AM), – a 2nd class coach, a couchette coach, and a sleeper coach from Budapest to Warsaw (to be taken off in Breclav) – a sleeper from Budapest to Moscow (to be taken off in Breclav), – a sleeper from Zagreb through Budapest to Minsk (to be taken off in Breclav), – a couchette and a sleeperfrom Budapest to Krakow (to be taken off in Breclav), – a 2nd class coach and a sleeper from Budapest to Prague (to be taken off in Breclav)
The latter will then be coupled onto Fast train No. 470 “Amicus” which arrives to Prague Main station at 6.15 AM. In the coach No. 376 (the sleeper from Budapest to Prague) you can sleep all the time between 8 PM and 6 AM. No need to crawl out of bed, no need to change trains.
