I’m planning on being in Europe from May 17 – June 22. My dates are pretty flexible though and I haven’t yet finalized my itinerary. I just know that I want to fly into Heathrow and fly out of Rome (though it ends up going to Heathrow anyhow).

I’ve been looking at the British Airways site every day and I can buy tickets for $773 total but am concerned they will be going up any day now. Matter of fact, last night, it went up to $993 but a second search on Kayak brought them back down.

Even though I don’t have my itinerary complete, do you guys think this is a good time to buy (at that price) or should I risk it and wait? Is it normal to not have a complete itinerary before booking a flight?

I am leaving from Phoenix, AZ with $5000 for 37 days
London, Bayeux, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Munich, Interlaken, Gimmelwald, Florence, Rome, Taormina, Catania, Syracuse, Cefalù, Termini Imerese, Palermo, Rome

If that $773 is still there I’d jump on it for several reasons. 1) I don’t think you’ll do much better out of PHX, especially for an open-jaw that includes Rome. 2) You’re staying longer than 30 days and many sale fares on other airlines will only allow a 30 day stay (BA is great in this respect). 3) It’s non-stop on the transatlantic leg, so you won’t have that extra trip through security like you would if you had a plane change in another U.S. city on your way home. 4) Free wine on BA Wink

Thanks for the quick response. I’ll see if I can’t get that flight tonight but I have my doubts. Has anyone ever had to switch flights on BA (with their economy tickets)? Perhaps move to a different date or airport? I tried looking over their policies but they are very poorly formatted and I couldn’t see what charges await me if (for some reason) I need to make changes.

All things considered currently, 773 seems a really good price for that itinerary.

[Edited to take out my “very short” comment about trip length. I thought it said May 17-22. It must be the pain meds.]

Looking at the link to Jim’s trip I thought he meant May 17-June 22.

Maybe I am confused. Is the “very short“comment related to booking a flight (30 days) or just a comment regarding my trip length?

Trip length. Your original post says May 17-22, so Don assumed it’s less than a week and I looked at the link to your trip and assumed it’s actually May 17-June 22.

Jim, like Hugo, about ten days ago I booked our son on BA for early May travel (Paris to Denver) at $732. It’s for a wedding, we are not all that flexible, and I just wanted the peace of mind of having a ticket.
We have never had to change anything with BA, but they did once cancel a flight on us, thus causing us to lose a day off our trip (and incur a sneer from our Parisian innkeeper when we showed up a day late.)
Still, as Augustin notes, nonstop BA flights are so nice, and the service can be good, as well.

You’re not alone. It seems I waited too long and the cheap fare ended last night. Now I am looking at $1030 r/t from Phoenix to London. I am thinking of shifting my trip ahead just to save $100.

Does anyone think airfare will go back down in the coming weeks or is it on the rise? I’m shocked that last night, it was $772 and just after midnight it jumped up $300!

Wait and try to book it early tomorrow morning. Seat availability might open back up—assuming the sale is still on.

I’m optimistic that we’ll still see some summer sales. I don’t expect prices to be as low as the last two years, but I can’t imagine that every single transatlantic seat this summer is going to go for about $1000 and up. We saw some early sales the last two years in Jan. & Feb. but there were also really good sales in March and April.

Does anyone know if BA price matches themselves? I can get a modified route (PHX->LHR, ROME -> PHX) for $970 now and want to jump on it. They have a low price guarantee but it only mentions “other US providers” and not BA. I’m hoping if I buy the ticket and the price goes back down I can get a refund.

Is that fare available on Orbitz? Their Price Assurance policy sounds like it would refund you the difference if the fare drops, but I’d definitely read the fine print:

Did you try the links and strategies in our new user thread? I see PHX-LON round trip your dates for $789 with Expedia. Looks like Air Canada is having a sale. If you’re flexible, I saw $686 with Priceline (an up-front fare on Air Canada, not a bid) but first try on your dates could only confirm $808. Heck, try Aircanada.com too, as well as BookingBuddy if you haven’t already.

Don,

I tried Kayak, Orbitz, and Expedia. I don’t use Priceline and from what I’ve read of BA, I think they would be the best flight (comfort-wise). Apparently, the US-based airlines are terribly cheap. I don’t know much about Air Canada or KLM but I do know that they both had stops in LA. BA from PHX to LHR is non-stop.

I ended up booking on BA for $884 (open jaw, PHX -> LHR, ROM -> PHX). I paid another $75 for seat preference. Probably a rip-off but I’d rather choose if I can.

I want to thank everyone for all of their advice. My advice to future travellers would be to buy if the deal seems great… I regret not purchasing tickets yesterday – I would have saved $100 and not have to adjust my trip dates.

Jim
