CA to Europe - July2010
Wed, 03/03/2010 - 15:42
Hello fellow travelers,
I have an itinerary I would like to share with the forum to see if anyone has good ideas. I have a somewhat flexible schedule, departing from CA (SFO/LAX) between 07-07-2010 to 07-12-2010 and staying for approximately 14 to 21 days. I am ultimately headed to Eastern Europe however to save money I’ve been researching flying into / out of the main Western European hubs. I have set up fare alerts on Kayak, Farecompare and Bing, used ITA, and has subscribed to several RSS feeds, all from the good advice on this forum.
The prize I am looking for is a round trip ticket under $1000. Anyone know when the summer fare sales start? Anyone think that under $1000 is reasonable? Any suggestions on airport hubs to search for?
Departure City SFO or LAX
Departure Date 07-07-2010 to 07-12-2010
Arrival City Open (main European hubs for cheapest flights available).
Total travel time 14 days to 21 days
Thanks for the support.

It sounds like you’re on top of things. We’ve seen a couple of summer sales this week, although they seem to be somewhat limited, and I’m optimistic that we’ll see more in the next month or so. The last two years U.S. Air had some good sales in March and April, and I got really good deals from SFO. We may not see tons of fares in the $500’s and $600’s like last year, but I don’t think under $1000 is unreasonable if you can jump on a sale. Sales could bring cheap fares to many different cities, but I’d watch MAD, BCN, DUB, FRA, GVA, ZRH, and LON since they either tend to be the cheaper cities to fly into from SFO (and often LAX) or are new routes for some carriers this year.
Thanks for the info. I will watch US Air – I really didn’t think of them as a transatlantic carrier.
I have found one good deal, however only on one leg of the journey. Air Berlin can get me from SFO to Germany (Dusseldorf I think) for $485 one way, however the return leg is priced much higher ($750).
Summer—Did you check out the Swiss sale I posted? Tried different dates and city combinations?
Don – I checked the Swiss Air deals last week. No specials were available from LAX when searching the July 2010 calendar (actually, I think I found one departure date, but no returns). I checked several destinations without any luck.
I have found some fares in the $1000 to $1100 range from SFO to CPH, LON, DUB. It seems like flying Wednesday to Wednesday may be the cheapest option.
Hey Don,
I found tickets from Lax to Zrh from July 3rd to July 21st for $898 total. Should I purchase these tickets now or do you think prices will get a little cheaper when the summer sales start coming up?
David
Zürich-Kloten Airport, Munich, Paris, Pamplona, Barcelona, Rome, Naples, Venice, Zürich-Kloten Airport
David/yoonda, that’s a good price. If ZRH is your actual preferred destination, then you should strongly consider purchasing. However, if you’ve got some flexibility, keep checking and make sure you sign up for sale alerts on some routes. Just realize that 898 might be the best you will get, so if it works for you, just don’t sit on your hands for too long!
