Calgary to Amsterdam Question
Tue, 09/07/2010 - 12:23
I found a ticket on Orbitz to go to Amsterdam from Calgary, AB for $492 USD. This seems like the best deal I’m going to get. Do you think there is any cheaper option or should I just book this?
I am leaving from Calgary, Alberta, Canada with $2400 for 20 days

If it’s for next summer, then that is a tremendous deal. Even in winter, that’s very good. I doubt you could fly just to Halifax for that much!

Yeah it’s for next July. Thanks, I think they will be purchased tody!

Thanks for sharing such a great fare. Is it with Air Transat or Martinair?
https://flightfox.co…
It was with Orbitz. Do you know if they are reliable? Any history with booking through them or hear any stories?
Amsterdam, Munich, Prague, Venice, Florence, Rome
I think it’s on Icelandair, Don. Orbitz is fine; I’ve booked with them many times.
Yeah it’s Air Canada to Halifax, then Icelandair for two flights (Halifax to Iceland, Iceland to Amsterdam).
So orbitz is reliable? That’s good to hear. They have the best deals for the flights I need right now.
Amsterdam, Munich, Prague, Venice, Florence, Rome
Yep, Orbitz is a good seller, and Icelandair is a good little airline. Of course you can dig up dirt on just about any seller, airline, person, etc. But overall, I don’t hesitate to book with Orbitz if I can’t get a better fare direct from the airline.

Awesome, thanks Don! It’s good to hear you’ve used it and have no problems with it, especially seeing as I just booked those tickets. Now I just need the return flights! Thanks again though, your help & comments are much appreciated.

Whoa whoa whoa, wait a second. It’s $492 one-way??!! That’s pretty normal for a half-fare. What have you found for Europe back to Canada?
Usually when people post for flights help and feedback, it’s implied that they’re asking about a return (i.e. round-trip) ticket, unless otherwise specified.

Oh, my bad… When I said Calgary to Amsterdam I literally meant, just Calgary to Amsterdam. Basically all I find back from Europe is about $1000. I want to fly back from Rome, that’s the best deal so far.
$1500 for total airfare is pretty average right? I am not upset if it’s not a great/good deal I’m getting, just so long as I’m not overpaying for anything.
Amsterdam, Munich, Prague, Venice, Florence, Rome
I should mention the price is including taxes as well. So the ticket cost was something like $380.

Like I said in your other thread, the $492 is pretty good for a one-way fare since they often cost more than half of a round-trip ticket, but you’re going to have a hard time finding a bargain one-way from Rome because one-way sales are really rare. Since you’re now locked into finding another one-way to get home I’d consider being more flexible with your itinerary and fly home from whichever city (of those you want to visit) offers the cheapest flight back to Calgary.
I definately agree, and my dates are not locked in. I’m waiting to see what the best deal to get home will be. Just have to see if there’s any advantage to traveling around and flying out with an $800 ticket as opposed to a $1000 ticket. All “deals” I find for round trip to Amsterdam and back are all around $14-1500 anyway, so I don’t see it as a big deal to spend 1500 to arrive in Amsterdam and leave from Rome. That being said I am doing your suggestion too and looking to see if it’s cheaper to fly out of Frankfurt, Munich, Prague or anywhere else along my way.

The best offers for next summer might not be showing yet. Try out ITA Software. There’s a small tutorial on how to use it in our new user thread @ top of this forum. Searching to YYC from various airports in Europe over the month of July, currently I can see Air Transat with $829 USD one-way from AMS on Saturdays, for example. But like I said… it could go cheaper.
Be sure to shop around—especially with the consolidators and BookingBuddy which are linked in the new user thread.
Finally, keep an eye on Canadianaffair.com for one-way flights from the UK to Calgary.

just book it
I thinks that’s a fair fare
Leaving during the week tends to give cheaper flights like on tuesday, wednesday, thursday, also take a look at multi ccity tickets where you can fly in to one city and fly out from another. I know rates will be different as you are western canada and I am ontario, but i found that CDG out of paris was the cheapest place to fly back home for me. Just a thought i might work for you it might not
I have also been looking at prices for flights to get a rough estimate for my 2012 trip i found RT tickets to amsterdam for around $800-$850 inc taxes and fees
Paris, Salzburg, Kraków, Berchtesgaden, Vaduz, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Bruges, Paris
Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up booking my tickets: one way Calgary to Amsterdam was just under $500, Return Flight: Rome to Calgary was just over $1000. So I spent $1500 on flights total. It’s Western Canada, tough to find anything cheaper… Anyways, I’m happy with it. Hard to be sad when you’re going to Europe in 8 months!

Enjoy your trip
