I’ve heard mention of camping out instead of hostels and such, but wouldn’t that mean I’d have to leave the city boundaries everytime I wanted to go to sleep? And if so, or not, whichever doesn’t bother me too much, does anyone have an idea for what kind of tent to use?

I have camped in Europe on two seperate trips (both trips we rented a car and camped). It is a great way to save money. Many places have campsites in the city boundaries and Stockhold even had one close to the city centre! Most campsites are near transportation that gets to the major attractions quickly. As for what type of tent. That’ll depend on the time of year and the countries you go to. You don’t need anything fancy or too hardy. It is hard to peg into the ground, so getting a hold of a mallet or a good rock is essential. I found that relying on the Lonely Planet guide books were not always useful as sometimes the book would give you 3 campsites for a city, and other cities the book provided no camping info. Hope that helps.
