Cheapest Flights from Oklahoma?
Thu, 11/19/2009 - 18:27
I am leaving from Oklahoma City for Budapest sometime in June 2010. It will probably be January before I can officially book my flight, but I am wondering what is the cheapest way to go. I am graduating college in May and so I looked into the student fares, but honestly I found those to be no cheaper, and in most cases, more expensive than I was able to find on expedia, travelocity, etc. Also, would it be worth it to look for flights maybe from Wichita or Dallas? Any help would be really appreciated!
I am leaving from Oklahoma and traveling for 15 days

You may have better luck finding a deal out of Dallas, but it’s tough to say if prices will be low enough from Dallas to make up for the hassle of flying from there instead of OKC. Budapest is not one of those cities you’ll find lots of sales to. It could prove cheaper to book a flight from OKC or DFW to an airport in another European city and then grab a cheap flight from there to Budapest. That said, you’ll want to weigh savings versus number of stops, layovers, etc. in your decision. Don’t worry about not booking until January; that will probably be the earliest you’ll find a good deal for summer.
ITAsoftware.com lets you search from OKC + 300 miles if you know specific dates; or, you can search from OKC;DFW;TUL to BUD; PRG over an entire month.
A quick check there turned up $1120 from OKC currently as the cheapest published airfare outbound in June. Consolidators, aka unpublished airfares, might be cheaper.
Outbound date determines fare season. The earlier you can go outbound, the better the chance you will have for finding cheaper airfare. Some airlines start peak season pricing on June 1; some around mid-June; and occasionally, a few routes with 1-2 airlines might not go to full peak-pricing until late June.
Back to ITA… Adding DFW, TUL, LTR, and ICT turned up $986 from DFW it outbound by May 19. (Same route from consolidator is $931 from DFW; $999 from OKC — both using the May 19 outbound, and both found with BookingBuddy).
Time is on your side, and while $999 from OKC isn’t bad for this itinerary—if you can leave by May 19—if I was booking for myself, I’d sign up for sale alerts on the route with Bing and Farecompare, cross fingers for something in the $800s, and be ready to pounce as soon as something pops up at that level or lower. Based on fare history off the top of my head for this route, I would realistically expect something around $850, but realize that past sales are no guarantee of future price levels.
As an alternate strategy, consider getting the cheapest ticket from OKC or DFW to Europe, then add low-cost flight to BUD, back from PRG, using the low-cost airlines within Europe. See Whichbudget.com and Skyscanner.net for those.
Also check www.weflyhome.com and www.generationfly.co… — since LH serve DFW.
Thanks for both comments! I am just winging it here (no pun intended) and I don’t really know what I am doing, so you have both been really helpful, thanks so much!

As a graduating Senior, you should be able to travel around mid-May; so that should benefit you, farewise. I’m not sure what US Flag Carriers serve Bucharest or Budapest, but most of them serve Frankfurt / Main (Germany). American Airlines has a Hub at DFW and Continental has one at Houston InterContinental (IAH), but both fly connecting flights from Will Rogers (OKC); it wouldn’t pay you to make separate arrangements to travel to either of those ‘Hubs.’
What I’m saying is: you’ll probably have to change Airlines/Flights at Frankfurt and your best deal will probably start at Will Rogers World Airport right there in your backyard
Thanks Eddie, I appreciate your input. I have been getting a lot of advice saying I should fly into somewhere else and hop another flight or train to Budapest, so I will definitely be checking into that. Also, I am going to graduate from Oklahoma State University. And as far as going in May, I would love to do that, but due to some stuff with my lease I am going to have to wait until at least the 2nd week in June. Thanks again!

Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
I don’t have any inside knowledge about Airlines or Schedules from those airports; but you might look into what’s available.
