This site and forum are great!

I am looking for some help. Trying to book for this June. Departing the 7th or 8th and returning 10-14 days later (depending on price). Was planning to fly open jaw into Milan and out of Split, Croatia. But prices are extremely high for that. Now am considering flying in an out of Milan or maybe altering my itinerary completely! Lowest prices in and out of Milan start at $1300 (that I am seeing). Is there another aigport/city I should consider flyining into? Are there better prices or strategies out there that I am missing? Thank you! Oh, and home airport is Columbus, Ohio.

I’m not seeing good retail prices (Orbitz, Expedia, airlines direct), but try the consolidators listed in our new user thread—top of this forum. Also be sure that you’ve signed up for fare alerts with Bing and Farecompare.

As a general rule, the best prices are for the airports that have a lot of competing airlines. But I don’t think Columbus and Milan are the problem. June is the problem as prices tend to be higher in what they call the high season. And they also don’t like to offer their best deals too far in the future, and, unless someone is offering a sale (I think Lufthansa is; and if you have the money, Continental is having a sale on business/first in the range of $2000 from Cleveland to Munich in July), it is a bit early to get a good price for a June flight. Delta, for example, is offering a round trip from Columbus to Milan in April for 880, more or less (I didn’t look to see if that included taxes).

So I would suggest you pick a price that would make you happy, and sign up for the fare alerts. If your price, or better, shows up, jump on it immediately. If your price hasn’t shown up by the end of March, stop waiting and get the best price then available. Definitely don’t wait until May, as prices often start to increase as the date of the flight gets nearer. And always look for sales until the date you buy.

I know at one time Columbus had some discount carriers, and I was going to suggest looking into taking one of them to a big airport, such as Newark, and taking your overseas flight from there. But that can cause big problems if your first flight is delayed, as the second airline will cancel your ticket (assuming you are buying a low cost non refundable ticket) when you don’t get to the gate on time, and keep your money. Some people fly that way, but to me the risk is too high.

Good luck.

Is there a special reason for choosing Milan as your destination city?
Most people do not consider spending very much time in Milan, as there are much more interesting places to see, especially on a trip the length of yours.
The more flexible you can be with your destination airport and dates of travel the better chance you will have of finding something for less than the $1300 you mentioned.
For example, I did a quick search on US Airways. Columbus to Zurich June 6th to the 17th or 21st comes in at $991 all taxes included. I like to use the individual airlines low fare finder tools as well as the other providers. Some times you find a unadvertised special. Be patient and consider all of your options and look for fares everywhere daily.

Thanks so much for the help and advice, I will hang in there and keep looking. WhiskyMe, I am not 100% tied to Milan. You are correct, I’ll only be staying there a day or two. I chose it because it is near several of the places I want to go and seemed to have lower flight prices than other airports in northern Italy. I’m also going to check into some other European cities, as you suggest.

ClevelandBrown, I did some initial research on what you suggest a while back and chickened out. I have bad flying karma, so I just don’t think I could take a chance on missing my connecting flight at the larger airport.
