Hello,
I’m planning to go to Europe next spring in late may with a few friends. We are planning to stay about 27 day approximately, and I was wondering how pressed for time or money we would be. My budget is about 4700 USD$ with the eurorail and airline ticket included. We will be traveling in western europe (UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc.), and I was wondering could we make little pitstops between larger towns (ie London to Paris) without a problem. Like if we wanted to stop at a beach between London and Paris would that be a possibility? Or would we be unable to do so with the 5 country eurorail pass ? Do you think this could cause a problem with time or money as well?
Thanks,
Shea

Not sure what you’re looking for in terms of a “beach” but stopping between London and Paris would add roughly two days of travel time on train, bus and ferry instead of a 2 1/4 hour train ride between the two cities. The beaches are not really that great by American standards. Go to the beach as a day trip from Rome.
Thank you, Oldlady you’ve been a great help with your advice…it’s greatly appreciated.
Do you think i should ge the 8 days in 2 months Eurail 5 country pass? or more travel days?

8 days should cover it, but you might also look at fewer days and point to point tickets from Florence to Rome and especially between Rome and Naples. Also check for cheap specials for the tickets in Germany (or that start or end in Germany) at http://reiseauskunft…
Wouldn’t my eurail pass cover the travel in Italy and Germany? So these other tickets would just be cheaper alternatives?

One more question, I’m worried about like landing at the airport or arriving at the train station and having to take a taxi, because I know they are expensive. Should we book hostels or Bed and Breakfast inns in advance or wait to see how close they are to our points of interest? Because i know traveling by taxi everywhere will cost a bit.
Thanks,

Every city in Europe has excellent public transit, so you don’t need to use taxis, unless you’re so overloaded with gear that it’s difficult to take subway, tram or bus. Even then you’ll only need to use a taxi to get between the station and your lodging. You’ll be able to use public transit to get to any sights you want to see each day in a few minutes.
Whether or not to book in advance depends on you and your travel style — do some reading on our “hostels” forum. You can book everything weeks in advance or you can almost always find a reasonable place to stay in any of the cities you mention by stopping at “tourist information” at the train station when you arrive (assuming it’s during the day). How much will a subway ride and maybe a bus and a short walk to get to your hostel bother you? B & B’s are sometimes more comfortable than hostels but they may be in suburban locations, so aren’t necessarily a great choice for the big cities you want to visit.

Do not take a taxi from any of the airports in London into Central London. Besides being expensive it will probably take longer then the train due to traffic. Depending on which airports you can usually take the metro or commuter rail that will be far quicker and cheaper. Also within cities cabs are generally a poor choice due to similar reasons except if your carrying a lot of things. I second what Oldlady says about the rail pass they sometimes are more expensive then just buying single tickets in advance on the web plus on trains such as the London-Paris route you have to pay a supplement that will cost you just as much as if you bought the ticket without the pass.
