Hi everyone!

I’ve been racking my brain trying to sort out a travel itinerary for Europe next year for myself and friends. I’ve come up with this:

************************************************
Valencia (Benicassim Festival) – 5 nights |
Zurich (via overnight train) – 2 nights outwith transfer |
Ljubljana (via overnight train) – 3 nights outwith transfer |
Budapest (via overnight train) – 3 nights outwith transfer |
Prague – 3 nights |
Munich – 4 nights |
Stuttgart – 3 nights |
Paris – 4 nights |
Amsterdam – 4nights |
Copenhagen (via overnight train) – 2 nights outwith transfer |
Gothenburg – 4 nights |
Oslo – 3 nights ************************************************

I just want to know people’s opinions on whether or not this intineray would be an enjoyable/managable one. Am I giving ourselves enough time in certain cities, am I taking into account the time taken travelling effectively?

Thanks for any input I receive – criticism welcomed!

Ross

I moved this since itinerary questions are usually in “favorite places.” I think it’s a great itinerary — although for the most part you’ve picked very expensive places. Why Zurich?

I love Ljubljana, but it’s pretty small. Are you planning on day trips? I’d spend a full day in Ljubljana and they do an overnight trip to the Lake Bled area or a day trip to Bled and a day trip to Postljana. Look at renting a car to explore outside Ljubljana. While the day trips are doable by public transportation, the logistics are a lot easier with a car.

From a travel standpoint, I think you’ve got too many overnight trains at the beginning. Look for a cheap flight or two. Travel time should be acceptable with the relatively long stays in each city.

Hey, thanks for your reply! I included a long stay in Ljubljana because a friend of mine said that the nightlife was particularly good plus it was to try and recover from the lengthy transport times. However, I didn’t realise it was a small place so I guess I should look into it a bit more. We are paying for a 30-day continuous railcard which is why we are travelling by train but it doesn’t cover the whole trip so I guess we could try some flights and have the railcard kick in at a later date.

I’ve researched the transport from Ljubljana and there aren’t many international destinations that would suit from the direction of Valencia. I believe it is only Zurich and Venice (http://www.slo-zelez…). We’re tied to Valencia because of the music festival in late July.

I’ve also been thinking about scrapping the entire scandinavian part of the trip and perhaps adding a couple of days to some destinations already on the itinerary.

I’m not sure this is your best bet. I’d think a flexi or select pass would be a better deal — particularly if you end up flying one or more of the long hops.

I agree, you should see Stockholm instead. Also, why not spend a bit more time in Spain. Barcelona is great and a lot of fun. I like your itinerary but I would spend more time in Spain.

Cities and side-trips between Valencia and Ljubljana:

Spain:

  • Valencia city and Valencia region (including Costa Blanca: Alicante, Altea, Denia)
  • Barcelona and Catalunya region (including Cadaqués, Tarragona, Castelldefels)

France:

  • Languedoc-Roussilon region (Carcassonne, Nîmes and Pont du Gard, Sète)
  • Marseille and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region (Arles, Avignon, Aix, Cannes, Nice, Menton, Grasse, Eze, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins, Roquebrune)

Italy:

  • Emilia-Romagna region (Bologna, Ravenna)
  • Liguria region (San Remo, Portofino, Cinque Terre Towns: like Vernazza and Corniglia)
