I love the Eurotrip planning feature. However, I would love if it could be more detailed. I think it has the potential to be a great tool for planning an entire trip. Even a section for notes under each stop on the itinerary would be great. I’d love to have one main site with map, calendar, lodging, notes, daytrips, etc. Just a thought Smile

Thanks for the feedback. I think we are on the same page on this. This week I will be rolling out an updated version of the trip planner that will be a big improvement which hopefully will help. I did not implement the new features you just mentioned, but I am introducing a ‘Trips Dashboard’ where you can manage all of your trips in one place. I need to start working on getting integration of things such as flights into trips so you can start to get an idea of what the costs of transit are.

With that in mind, what exactly is the functionality that you would like?

Notes for each stop
Would this be notes that only you, the trip owner, can write? Or would it be the ability for anyone to comment on a specific city within your trip? Would this be used mainly for planning?

I am not sure what you mean by ‘having one main site with map, calendar, lodging, notes, daytrips, etc.’.

If you can give me as much detail as you can to describe the new features you think would be beneficial, I will try to get them into my next release.

Thanks…

Basically, what I’m thinking is a more detailed calendar for the owner. When I was working with my eurotrip plan, what I didn’t just want to say, for example, that I’d be in Paris for 11 days. Personally, I’m a really detail-oriented person and like to have a really good idea of what I’ll be doing before I travel, so I wanted to note a few museums I’d like to go to, which day I want to day trip to Versailles or Giverny, what time of day I’d be heading to the next city, etc.

You mentioned added some sort of transportation feature, which I think would be really helpful. I think that at being able to see on the calendar what times trains or flights leave, how long it takes to get from one leg of the trip to the next would be really helpful in planning. Incorporating the flights and railsaver or railtickets tool would be great too so people can budget realistically for transportation.

This might be too in depth, but like I mentioned before, I found myself wanting to make note of certain museums, sights, etc. to go to. If there was a way to make sure plans are feasible (make sure the museum is not closed that day, etc.) I think that would be helpful. I suppose this could even be done by other eurotrippers. With more detailed itineraries, it would be easier to help others plan their eurotrips. For example, if I was trying to fit in too many sights in one day, other users could let me know that my schedule is looking cramped, and I should consider adding another day. Or, for example, if I’m only going to be in Paris for a day, let’s say Tuesday, and my itinerary includes a trip to the Louvre, other users could let me know that the Louvre would be closed and I should make other plans. Generally, I think more detail could help users help each other. If I can see what someone is interested in, what sites they want to see in some cities, I can make better recommendations.

Finally, what I was trying to say with ‘having one main site with map, calendar, lodging, notes, daytrips, etc.’ is that in planning my trips, I’d like to have all my plans, and links in one place. That is, incorporating a lot of the features I described above into the eurotrip feature so I can say, I’m getting into Munich at 10 a.m., I’m staying at Hostel A, and going on a bike tour just after noon, with a link to the rail website, hostel website and tour company. Does that make any more sense?

I know that this wouldn’t work for everyone. A lot of people don’t like to plan out every day, and with things like Eurail passes, trains can fill up and it can be difficult to get on the exact train you want, but for other, more detail-oriented travelers, it could be a great help.

Thanks for taking the time to give me such a detailed description of what you would like to see from this app. I really appreciate the feedback because sometimes I feel like I am developing this all in a black box.

We launched this app at the beginning of the year and one of our main criteria at the time was ‘keep it simple’. We did this because we wanted people to be able to try it out without being bombarded with tons of features. Obviously this worked because we have had over 4,000 trips entered in 5 months. Now we are at the point where we need to start filling out some of the details and give the users more options.

This morning I released a new version of the trip planner that cleans up the interface a lot as well as introducing a bunch of new features (copying trips, publish/unpublish trips, manage all your trips from one interface). This release is a pretty extensive rewrite of the trips application with special attention payed to extending it to allow for additional features.

You have touched on a few things that we have been planning on adding, but have not gotten to it yet. Here is a list of things we have been planning on doing. I would be interested to know what you think of them and if you would do things differently. Since these features take time, I have to prioritize them and do them one at a time.

Integrate Rail – We are hoping to be able to integrate rail into the trips application so you can compare point to point ticket cost with buying a rail pass.
Integrate Flights – We want to integrate flights so you can get pricing and book flights for long journeys.
Integrate Favorite Places – You will notice that there are a lot of Favorite Places on the Map. We want to set it up so it is easy to add Favorite Places to your trip. I will consider adding additional time details so you can specify when you plan to visit the place.
Integrate Hostel Details – When you book a hostel, all of the details for the hostel will be added to your trip so you can reference it later. It is meant to have all of the details for how to get there etc available in one place for your hostels.
Trip Specific Printable Guides – This is important with the previous two features. It allows you to print off directions, details, notes and more information for your trip. This would include the details for the Favorite Places, Hostels, Rail, Flights, etc in a printable form that would allow you to take your trip with you in a paper form.

I will read over your list again and try to fit in your suggestions. If you want to add to this now that you have an idea what we want to do, please do. Smile

Thanks again for your help making the trip planning application better.

WOW… thanks for the great site. I specifically joined up here because of the great trip planning feature. It makes it a lot easier than printing out a bunch of blank calendars and trying to fill out the days with a little bit of organization.

I’d like to second the notion of allowing a more detailed itinerary for the different locations. Even if for right now it’s just some simple comments that we can add to locations. So when we get some good ideas we can save them.

Allowing to print would be great. Getting a print out of the map with the locations defined, as well as a calendar with the dates and locations. Being able to add notes and comments to this printout would be good too.
