I lose a point whenever I go back an edit something — at least I think that’s what happens.

you get a point every time you create a comment or a topic in the forum.

when you edit one, you should not gain or lose any points, so i think what it shows you is that you gain one and then loose one so that you end up at the same number of points you had. you only gain points for adding content, but it is built so that i can give points for editing content as well, however we are not using that part. sorry if that seems odd.
