I made a very foolish mistake and undermined the time it may take to accure a study visa for Italy!
I have already purchased a round trip ticket to Switzerland (flying in July 17th and out January 6th) with the intention of spending two weeks in Bern and then the rest of my time in Italy traveling for two months and attending a language unversity in October.
I do not know if my visa will be ready by the time I go, I was told I could obtain it in a week, now I have read that a month should be anticipated.
I am fully aware of the 90 day within 6 month period law for the Schengen states, so what can I do? I need to go because what I have planned for July/August is more important to me than this school.
I read that is is possible to extend a 30 day tourist visa in Italy once: where? Must I go to the consulate or can I do it there?
Though it is illegal can I buy a plain ticket out of Zurich after three months to show when I return to the states saying that I spent 3 months in Switzerland and 3 in Italy? Some loop hole?
Please help me if you can.
Thanks.

You get 3 months Switzerland + 3 months Schengen.
A few of ideas…
A. Could you max out your time in Italy, then come back over to Lugano to finish language lessons?
2. Pay the ticket change fee + any additional airfare to come back early, scrapping the language school idea?
4. Your receipt for bus or train or flight out of CH to IT within 2 weeks should suffice as your proof of onward travel within 90 days. Book, print, take it with you. The airline might also ask for this (they’re supposed to) when you check in to get your boarding passes.
So, that gets you to CH legally, to IT legally, and back in 6 months… but breaking up that time is the sticking point. Have you already applied for the visa? If so, then when it arrives, could you get someone to mail it to you in Italy?
Don, My hats off to you, I was really confused with the request and you have finally come through for here,
wonderful!!!
