I don’t see why ANYONE stays in hostels or hotels especially in Europe when Europe is so active with couchsurfing!!!! I couchsurfed in 8 places in Europe and each experience was better than the next. I’ve never had a bad experience and made so many great friends that way AND ITS FREE!! plus americans always think it’s “sketchy” but it’s very easy to see who’s credible and who’s not on the site because you have to earn certain honors and they have a very secure vouch system and references too!

I agree about not staying in hostels the whole time, I’m sure there are locals willing to help you out for a night if you’re willing to do some chores or help with dinner. And what about camping. Sleeping outside or in a tent. I think it would be a lot of fun if you were to spend the majority of time sleeping wherever you stop.
