Hi all, first time planning a backpacking trip for this summer around the 1st of August to the 18th or so. I want to start in Paris and from there go something along the lines of Paris>Zurich>Venice>Rome>Milan>Marseille/Nice>Paris. I’m hoping to do this in under 3 weeks by Eurail, what do you guys think the feasibility of it is? Feel free to give suggestions on what to miss or what to see instead based on your own experiences as the route is very flexible right now. Thanks Smile

Why Zurich? It’s not in the Alps.
Why Milan? It’s a big, busy, expensive business center, with, IMO, only a couple of interesting sights for a tourist.
Why Marseilles? The food and wine are great, but for the most part it’s one of the world’s biggest freight ports.

Just a thought:

Maybe you could do Paris>Annecy>Nice>Liguria, Italy

After that, it would be up to you to choose Venice or Rome (and whether to just fly home from there.) You could do both, but it’s a lot of ground to cover.

Zurich is actually a nice place to see, even if it isn’t in the mountains. My suggestion would be to look into taking a train from Zurich through Chur to Tirano, Italy, and on to Venice. Crossing the alps by train is memorable. Chur to Tirano is the route of the Bernina express, possibly the world’s most scenic train ride, but I would take the regular train over the same route; all you get with the premium Bernina express is higher cost and fancier cars; the scenery is the same.
