I am planning a trip to Amsterdam, Germany, Belgium and Paris for Summer 2010 and coudl really use some suggestions as far as must see sites and things to do. Our itinerary is pretty much wide open and other than hostels and the general locations we dont have any specific plans.

Whats the best city in Germany to visit if were planning on coming from Amsterdam, staying for 2 days, and then heading to Paris? We hope to also visit a concentration camp along the way – Has anyone visited one? Or have any suggestions?

I am leaving from New York with $1200 for 11 days
Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Brussels

If you visit one city in Germany, it should be Berlin, and despite the geography, it kinda makes sense Amsterdam-X-Paris, with x=Berlin, as there is a night train Berlin to Paris.

As for concentration camps in the Berlin area, Sachsenhausen is the obvious choice, being an hour north on the S-bahn to Oranienburg. I’ve been to Berlin several times, but not to Sachsenhausen. I have been to Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Mauthausen and Dachau and the ghettos in Warsaw, Krakow and Thereienstadt.

With a rail pass a day trip to Buchenwald and Weimar are quite possible from Berlin, and is quite worth it, though that would leave you with only one day in Berlin, which is sub-optimal. Of course with only two days in Germany, visiting any concentration camp is not the best use of your time, whatever your good intentions. Where not restrict yourself to a visit to the holocaust memorial in Berlin?

I loved Munich, having been to both Berlin and Munich, i though munich was awesome. One of the better places I have visited. Great food, beer, fun time, great sights to see, great day trips. All around a great place
