Hi everyone! I’m thinking of going to Germany for approx. 2 weeks in the beginning to middle of December. I’ve heard about the Bavarian Christmas markets and wonder what people’s experiences were with those – ie. which are the best. I have been to Munich before, but not elsewhere in Germany. Any other tips for travelling in December would be appreciated. Many thanks!

There are several old posts dealing with Christmas markets — try the search box. Here are a few:

Basel, Cologne, Mainz, Vienna, Passau, Bratislava, Regenberg, Nuremburg are featured on the Christmas market tours.

If you want to see a different part of Germany, you’ll find Christmas markets almost everywhere.

Nuremberg’s is the most famous but very crowded, I understand. Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Bamberg, and Wuerzburg are all near each other and make for a very nice travel circle.

You could head over to the Rhine towns as well. Mainz and Rüdesheim have very nice markets. I’ve heard good things about Cologne’s as well. Stuttgart to the south would be an interesting destination in winter, not sure about the market.

Overall, you’ll want to stay in mid-sized to large cities as the smaller places are deadsville in winter.
