good French rock:
 
Noir Desir – prob. the most famous French rock group.  the lead singer is currently in prison for killing his girlfriend, but they still record stuff from prison.
Louise Attaque – another good one, with no killing.
M – more on the poppy side, but good nevertheless. and an awesome haircut to boot!
Tetes Raides
 
There is a lot of good chanson francaise/funky stuff as well.  9 out of 10 hipsters agree that both Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Dutronc are worth listening to.  Zebda and Trio are two current funk/hip-hop/Zouk groups that are fun.
