As a female who’s traveled alone internationally three times, I’d like to say that first of all don’t let your uneasiness stop you from traveling. You’re going to have the time of your LIFE!

If you are feeling a bit uncomfortable being on your own though, I’d recommend trying group travel.

I’ve done two trips with a great company called Contiki. Traveling with them makes everything a bit more worry free because you don’t have to worry about how you’re getting from city to city, lugging your suitcase around subways, etc., but it’s SO independent! You can do what you want to do in each city, and you travel with a lot of amazing people from all around the world and create some really lasting friendships. Plus, everyone is young and ready to have a good time!

So if you’re a woman traveling alone and feeling nervous, check out contiki.com.

I don’t care for group travel. I like solo travel — but not all of the time.

If you have a travel buddy but can’t seem to exactly mesh the vacation dates, "must sees" for the itinerary, travel style, etc., don’t over look the possibility of traveling together part of the time and traveling solo part of the time.

Also look at a short group tour (a week, 2 weeks max) combined with a couple of weeks on your own.

Solo travel has lots of advantages. Contrary to what seems logical, I prefer starting out on my own and then hooking up with others later. People seem to think you need a group tour or a companion to help you get oriented and comfortable before starting out solo. Not so, just take a deep breath and go — you’ll have a wonderful time on your own.

Agree with oldlady.
Traveling on my own or with one other woman friend is like a tonic to me.
