Hi all,

I am new to this forum and I hope all the experts could help me out! We have a cruise coming up in June. Need to fly from SFO to BCN on either June 3rd, 4th or 5th and return on June 20th or June 21st. The fares have been very high. I am still beating myself up on missing the Swiss sale on March 3! I was very busy working that day and did not have a chance to jump on the fares and the sale only lasted like half a day. Someone told me it would have been a bit over $2800 for 3 of us (2 adults and one child) after taxes and fees which I consider not bad at all. I have fare alerts set and have been looking everyday. Someone I know mentioned about waiting until the first week of April if nothing much goes no in March, then book whatever I could get by then since it is too risky when it gets too close. What are the thoughts here? Please post if you see any good fares. Thanks a lot!

Cheapest dates look like 3rd-21st, and cheapest I can find for you is $1115 (Expedia.com). It sounds like you’re doing everything you can — signed up for alerts and ready to book. There’s no guarantee of sales, but USAir usually does a spring sale covering travel into June. I would want to book by early April in this case—since you don’t have a lot of wiggle room on your dates.

I’m not sure you should be. I was checking the Swiss website for fares out of SFO during that sale and never did find any available seats at the sale prices. Last year I got SFO-BCN, MAD-BCN on U.S. Air for $617 for June/July travel during a sale in May, and the year before I booked SFO-FRA for $600 during a sale U.S. Air had in April. Like Don said, cross your fingers and hope we’ll see a decent sale this year.

Thank you for the feedback! I am keeping my fingers crossed for sure. I agree we should book no later than early April since we do not have room to wiggle due to our cruise.

I just saw a fare that is $1219 total after tax and fees for each of us on AA. It is from SFO connecting at JFK to Barcelona. It is still more than what I want to pay but after seeing all these high fares for a while, I am really wondering if this would be a fair price. The connection and times seem to be quite good. Only one connection at JFK and the wait time is only couple hours. I like to hear what you all have to say.

Quanmama –

$1219 seems a little high. Last week I booked SFO-LHR for $750 Direct on Virgin Atlantic (for travel from May 24-Aug 31). The next cheapest I found was $1050 from SFO-AMS but that was with a connection at O’hare.

I know it’s a pain to search every day but it might be worth holding out a little longer…

I am leaving from SFO with $8000 for 98 days

I personally would wait a little longer to see if there will be a summer sale, but I’m a bit of a gambler. I just think that you’ll be able to find $1200 with one stop even if you decide to wait a bit. See what Don has to say.

I agree the price is a little high so I have not purchased it. It is likely not even there anymore given the fares change so quickly. It seems to me that it is not difficulty to get cheap fares for SFO-LHR and I wish this is what we need! We will hold out a little longer and see what happens.

I would look into SFO-LHR in combination with a separate flight on either RyanAir or EasyJet to your final destination. SFO-LHR is not what I need either, but it ends up being cheaper and I much prefer a direct flight to Europe. I’ll be taking Eurostar to my first destination and an intercontinental flight back to LHR on my last day.

Imatrojan,

I see that you will be traveling in Europe for 3 months. What fun!
I am concerned that we will exceed the luggage limit for those cheap European airlines.
Don’t those airlines have very strict luggage limits?
We will be on a 12 days cruise so it is not like we could just pack T shirts and shorts.
We usually pack light for most vacations but still have a hard time getting it very light for cruises.

Hi quanmama,

The budget airlines (i.e. easy jet and ryanair) do have strict luggage guidelines. However my 70L pack will check-in fine for 15 eu extra.

I can’t imagine you would have much trouble as long as you don’t exceed the 15kg checked-bag weight limit on ryanair (I think it’s 20kg for easyjet)…

How are you calculating that? You may have figured it correctly since I don’t know what your bag weighs, but Ryanair’s limit on any one piece of baggage is 15kg. If your bag weighs more than that you can’t simply pay for two bags; you pay 20₤/20€ (whatever local currency is where you depart) per kilo over 15.

I’m going to transfer about 10kg of weight into my day pack (10kg allowance onboard). I should have clarified.
