Hostels and very young Kids
Thu, 10/29/2009 - 13:38
My question may be premature as I have not done enough research yet.
I am planning a trip in April to Europe. I have a business partner in Germany who I am meeting with and decided to plan a small 2 week trip with my whole family. 2 kids under 4 years old..yes god help me.
Do most hostiles take kids in their private rooms? Pricing is per person/per room? How does it work?
Thanks
jason

If you’re staying at a private room and not a dorm, it’s certainly not a problem. In some cases they have a set price per room, in some cases per bed, and in some cases (when they don’t have private rooms as such) you will have to pay for an entire dorm, even if it has more beds than you need. Some hostels, when there is enough room, may give you a dorm for yourselves without charging you for the unused beds (even without kids, I’ve experienced this when travelling with a small group in low season). If you want to be sure, call or e-mail the hostels you want to stay at to be sure.
In some cases (but this depends on where you go), travelling with a family, you may be better off staying at a campsite that has cabins, or in private rooms (“Zimmer Frei”).
Thank you for the information. I am traveling with a 2 year old and a 4 year old. I hope I am sane when I return.
Thanks

With two small kids, I’d look at minimizing travel. Maybe stay in one, or at most two, cities. Consider renting an apartment. For a family, this may be just as cheap. I’d also plan a lot more than if traveling alone.
A few hostels do say they are for people over 18 only. HI hostels tend to be quite family-friendly – take a look at www.hihostels.com .
Also, remember your kids probably aren’t that interested in museums or whatever. They’ll be far happier with parks, ice cream, boat rides – that sort of thing.
Thanks for the tips.
We are not planning on any museums to tell the truth. I would love to go but it would be a nightmare and not worth it. That will be for when they are older.
We are packing it. Looking for fun things for the kids along the way as well. I realize some hostels will not take us, that’s understandable and thanks for pointing that out, you always need to ask.
Thanks again for the tips, they are a great help.

I am working on that as we speak. I will post it soon and get some more ideas.
