Hey everyone,

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I wasn’t sure where to put this. Anyways, I’m going to Europe over my semester break and I’m going to be splitting my time between hostels and Couch Surfing hosts. I won’t have a phone while I’m there as I’ll only be gone for 2.5 weeks and international calling/texting plans are expensive. I’ll need to be in contact with some of my hosts and I was wondering if any of you have had success with texting apps on the iPod touch so I can text my host’s cell phone from my iPod. Will the person I text be charged for receiving a text from one of these Apps? Also, I’m looking for something that will only cost the person I text one of their texts from their plan or a standard text fee, rather than an international fee.

Any help is much appreciated! If it helps I’ll be in Germany and Switzerland—Is there an app that will give me a number from one of these countries so the person I text will definitely not be getting charged for an international text?

Thanks!

Forgive my ignorance on Apple products, as I’ve never owned one (I’m a PC + Android person). I know that iPod is just an MP3 player. In order to be able to communicate with it, wouldn’t it need some sort of connectivity? Like WiFi? I think you meant the iPad (not the iPod)?? The iPad is basically just a giant smartphone. I think it does everything a smartphone does, plus some PC functions. No?

Anyways, if you meant the iPad, then in order to use it to communicate, you’ll need one of three things: cell-phone service in Europe with data plan, cell-phone service in Europe without data plan, or access to wi-fi. Now, what connectivity does this app require? Does it need to be connected to the internet? Then you would need either a data plan or wi-fi connection. If the iPad can send text messages through old-fashioned cell phone service (no data plan), then just use that. There are several travel SIM cards on sale online, just Google it.

So it looks like the OP will have to rely on WiFi in order to communicate with an iPod.

wickl, please take a look at these threads (they mention advice on wifi):

Thanks for the suggestions! I probably should have mentioned that it is an iPod touch, so I was going to try and look around for internet cafes. I was thinking about Skype too, but I thought it would be more convenient to text directly to their phone. An app I was considering was TextPlus…but I think after searching more I think a majority of those apps only work with US numbers.

Also, thanks for the advice on WiFi. I know that in Spain it was pretty easy to pop into a McDonalds or Pans and I could get free WiFi as long as I bought something. I’m hoping it’s the same in Germany or Switzerland.

You may have already looked into them, but it seems that Heywire and Pinger might work.

A couple things:
For skype, you can add credit and text to actual phone numbers from your skype app and it costs around 9-10c per text. It’s usually around 2-4c per min for a call from skype app to phone.
If the person you’re contacting has a smartphone or other web-enabled device, kakaotalk is easily the best texting solution. You do have to link it to your phone number (which you can do with your home number, no problem, even if you have a basic non-smart phone and you want to use the app on a wifi device like iTouch) but as long as you have a data/wifi connection texting to/from other people with the app is completely free. It’s hugely popular in Asia, but starting to catch on in the US.
