Montmartre

Montmartre literally means mountain of the martyr and owes its name to both the hill in the center of the district and the martyrdom of St. Denis who lost his head on that hill in 250AD. But ever since the late 19th Century, the district of Montmartre has been more well known as the epicenter of bohemian life in Paris. Today enjoy the numerous nightclubs and bars that line the streets of the district, but be sure to take note of the brilliantly white Basilica of the Sacre Coeur that sits high atop the hill.
