Hey im also from Canada and moving to the UK with my friend for about a year! We are going on the Student Work Abroad Program
www.swap.ca this is the only program I have really heard about for moving and working in the UK. We will have a 2 year work visa for the UK and Ireland.

Thats awesome! I am so excited im leaving late January. We are booking our flight this week and it will prob be Jan 26th!!! We are going to fly into London and spend a few days….then do one of the Bus About Tours called the Full Monty (takes you up to Edinburgh and back to London) then prob spend couple more days in London. Then I think we will go back up to Scotland to work first! What are your plans?

Hey guys, I’m Canadian and in London at the moment and have been here for 2.5 years. Am off travelling next week for a year or so and will miss London HEAPS! You’re in for a great time!!!

I’ve got a section on my website dedicated to London at http://www.travoholi… which should help with some basic, common questions. If you want to know more, I love talking about living here so please get in touch!

Just a heads up… SWAP isn’t the only way to come to the UK to work. Getting the visa for yourself is very easy, just get in contact with the embassy in Ottawa and fill in the right forms… it’ll save you a couple hundered $$$.

London is an easy city to get set up in and find a flat, job etc… so mayn travellers come here to live for awhile so there’s a great traveller community which makes things easy. SWAP isn’t really much of a help and if you haven’t already signed up and paid, I’d say do it yourself and save your money. But if this is your first time working abroad and you want piece of mind then it might be worth it.

Again, have a wicked time!

I’m going to agree with Kirsty, even though I haven’t arrived in London yet, I’m heading over in March, and it was SIMPLE to get my working holiday visa. I was contemplating going through SWAP and to be honest I’m glad I didn’t. Now I have my visa and with websites like www.gumtree.com I’m confident I’ll be able to find a place to live and a job without much hassle. (it helps that I have friends who live in London so I have places to crash while looking for a place of my own though!)

It only took 3 business days to get my work visa back in the mail. I was really suprised how easy it was.

Hi

I just returned from a yr and a bit trip to London. Was awesome experience. If you want somewhere cool to live go to Bayswater. It’s right smack bang in the middle of everything and there are dozens of tubes and bus stops around. Also when you get there get your hands on a TNT mag, it’s like a travellers Bible. It has everything in it, including jobs and accommidations. Be aware it is a Aussie/ Kiwi and South Afrian mag so anywhere you stay will be cool in there.

I lived in a place called Princes Square hostel. 50 pounds a week if you stay in a 6 bed room and they do have all girl dorms. Small weird place but heaps of fun people. At least there was when I was there.

I’m sooo jealous… I want to go live in Europe Frown However, BUNAC is a good site to check out. They set you up with a visa and help you get an job so you can legally work in the country. They also set up some social gatherings/trips if that’s of interest to you. I used them for my bluecard(shortterm working permit) when I was in London on summer.

Good luck and have fun!!

Heya, I am in London at the moment on a SWAP programme and now that I’m here I feel confident that I could have done the visas and such myself. SWAP is not that great. I used the gum tree to find a live in job which covered to things at once. I wasted 380 cdn dollars on it really. I would say that the only thing that you really get out of the orientation is finding out about National Insurance Numbers. Pub Jobs are easy to find, but there are long hours involved and don’t expect tips. They are good fun though and you can get to know a lot of people from the area.

Hey, I just finished a year in the UK/Europe. It’s great! the best site for getting around the UK is www.megabus.com

cheap bus service!!! It’s absolutely brillant.

Finding work is easy. I would advise against going with SWAP if you don’t need to. finding work is easy, and then you get to save the money that you pay into the program.

I heading back over in Jan for another year. I love it in the UK.

Hope everyone has a great time!

How is it easy to find a job in London with the IT/Software industry? I’m also from Canada and I would like to get that working holiday visa. I love software development and travel so I figure this would be the best option to have for me. I’m just worried about getting a job in my field that I love. If anyone can help me out, that would be great.
