New Eurotrip; More Mods
Sun, 03/12/2006 - 11:45
Hey Guys,
Some Eurotrip news.
I got in contact with Mike (he’s the guy who owns this site) and had a really long conversation with him about what was going on here at the boards. I’ve known Mike for a few years now but haven’t talked to him in a while.
Long story short, he felt awful about how Eurotrip was neglected and will be spending a lot more time upgrading and adding to the site by allowing for more interactivity from the users. He also said that within the next month there will be huge updates that are already in the works, but assured me that the forums will remain as they are, only upgraded with new forum software, etc. It all sounded very positive.
Next, I told him that a good amount of the forums are moderator-less and asked him if we can add some mods to these forums to quash the recent surge in spam. He gave me admin access and asked me to pick a few of the members. So, if you would like to moderate a forum please let me know. Also, if you know anyone who would make a good mod, let me know that too.
Thanks.
BTW, Mike and I are going to be keeping in constant contact about what’s going on here to make sure that all the users are involved. So if you have any ideas or questions let me know, and I’ll be sure to bring them up.
I think this is a really good first step.
I am leaving from New York, NY and traveling for 63 days

Well, you should add your email address so people can contact you or him directly. Some people may be shy about posting through here, especially in a thread. New software isn’t necessarily the key, but having the right people in moderator, admin positions is.
Spam is a small problem but one that is wide ranging – the clown or two who has spammed has hit everything including the gay and lesbian thread – having a moderator who is only for one forum may not be the best choice, having one or two for some of the lesser used forums is a step in the right direction.
New software is another thing that can be taken or leaven – are fancy icons or other things that increase server load really beneficial to a place like Favourite Places – the most visited and most used place?
Well, anyhow good luck with it!
I agree about putting up an email address.
If Eurotrip could merely have some of what it used to have, such as profiles and suchlike, it would liven the site up a bit.
In the olden days, we could post images. That was kind of fun, if not vital.
Don’t know if she’d want it, but I nominate Jester to be a moderator.
Glad to hear the good news!
I havn’t been online as much due to packing, moving, wedding planning, etc., and apologize for some spam getting into "Rest of the World."
I would like to moderate a forum. I have a great resume and come highly recommended.
I’ll moderate definitly. Just let me know what ones you need people for and i’ll do it.
I am already a mod at the "other" site, so I can handle doing this site too.
Icbites, you crack me up. You should change that to highly recommended.
Wow, thanks, Cil, but why would you put the forum into such peril??
Kidding, it’s actually nice after the rough weekend, I accept, I would like to moderate a forum, just please don’t give me the gay forum, I’m having issues lately.
How about you, Cil, wouldn’t you be up to some moderating?
Although this place has been awfully neglected, it’s a good site in terms of information. Most pubbers left, but people still come for the reason this site exists, which is euro-travel, the information is good, and many veterans left, but the more people travel, the more they will come to advice people. This place still has a future, but it needs some heavy duty maintenance. Not only profiles and whatnot, for example, the find friends section still has the 2005 dates. Not so important if we pretend the 5 is a 6.
But many forums don’t have that much traffic anymore. The family section, advice for solo chicks, etc are an example of that. Maybe those forums could be replaced or fusioned (so as not to loose that section) with more interesting forums that are not here, I dunno, just trying to put my 2 peso cents…
I was a mod here back awhile back.
In ’03 I left to go to BBB, which is now having troubles of its own.
Don’t know if the Powers That Be would want me back.
I might be willing, but I am not sure they really need me anyway, looks like y’all probably have it covered.
I agree that Eurotrip has lots of good info but sorely needs some housecleaning and updating.
Hi mim, thanks for contacting Mike. I’d be happy to keep on with cheap flights if you all will have me. I wouldn’t mind keeping an eye on 1-2 more of the lesser-used forums, either, just to keep the spam out and try to keep the tone civil, etc.

Profiles work now!

Don, I think it’s safe to say you’re still wanted around here.
Thanks for all the support, guys.
Don, if it wasn’t for you I think this website would have gone down ages ago. I’d love to add you to a few of the other forums, any preferences?
Cil, if you would like to mod I’d love to have you. I never got caught up in the politics of the site and you always seem to have great contributions. It doesn’t seem like you’re too enthused about the idea though, so if we need you i’ll let you know.
Sickboy, check and check. I added my email to my profile which, as Cil pointed out, is working now. Also, I agree that new software isn’t the key element, but it would def’ly help. This version of snitz is getting rather buggy, and I think that new software would combat that — with or without animated emoticons.
Jester, would love to have you moderate. Also, fixed the 2005 problem on missed connections.
Nivid, I looked at some of your past posts and would like to have you mod as well.
After I get a few more volunteers I’ll make a preliminary mod list. I want to put at least two people on Fav. Places and Hostels and make one person mod for a few of the lesser used forums. Also, I think we should add a mod to the pub to replace Xantos who doesn’t seem to be here anymore — if that’s not the case, let me know.

I’ll be a mod, doesn’t matter what forum
I could take Working In Europe with some degree of competency (as a, em, worker and employer in Europe). I could cover Guidebooks and Packing forums, or share any of these 3 with someone else. There’s spam in Guidebooks forum from at least March 3; spam in Packing from at least Feb. 27—if that’s an indicator of the last time a mod might have been on those forums.

Okay, I made the first round of changes.
Don, Jester, and Nivid — Let me know what you think. Cil, I would like to put you in as the second mod of Fav. Places, and maybe a second for hostels.
Before I change anything else, I would like to see who else is interested in modding since this is all being done very quickly.

I just asked him, and he just doesn’t have the time anymore. Work and home life takes up 99.9% of his time
. So he said to please feel free to replace him. Thanks for making sure, tho!
mim,
It’s me NIVID
Thanks for making me mod of the 2 forums. One problem though, I can’t seem to log in as nivid anymore. I just set up this new account to post this, but i’ll be back to nivid as soon as it’s fixed up.
nivid, what’s the error message?

Hey, this is what i’m getting when I log on.
Your username and/or password were incorrect.
Please either try again or register for an account.
Normally, I keep my password saved on my computer so I don’t even have to type it in everytime I visit the site.
I can’t figure this one out.
Nivid, check your email.

What about me?
Why no mod for Sir Icbites?
Hi, I’m looking around, and I have to thank you, MiM for the trust you’re giving us.
I’m also reporting the same problem as Nivid, I can’t login as Jester and I’m getting the same error.
No problem guys — thanks for your help and sorry about the login issues. Nivid and jester, be sure to check your email; hopefully it’s fixed.
Beelo, thanks for the update.

The original nivid is back!!!!
Thanks for the help mim
Problem solved, thank you
Looks like it’s working, MIM.
Deja vu all over again.
Hello!!
I’m being ignored here!
Sorry Icbites—
Thanks for volunteering, but at this point I don’t know you well enough nor do you have a large number of posts in any of the forums. I’ll keep you in mind though in the future! Thanks again for volunteering.

Sorry guys, work has been crazy so I’m a couple of days behind
More mods is a good start.
I wouldn’t mind doing some other forums as well as the pub is pretty much a free fire zone and ‘Study abroad’, ‘Advice for Solo Women Travelers’ don’t have much going on anyway.
I also think there should be at least 2 mods to any forum.
After all, mods do go on vacation (or get swamped at work) which leaves the forum unmoderated.
Forgot to say… WB Cil
Aw thanks Wa1ter!
Walter wants come pussy.
IC should really stay away from drugs when he intends to post.
Walter, that’s a great idea, 2 mods per forum or 1 moderator with access to every forum, like a substitute in case a mod gets sick, tired of this place, is homeless 6 months (like me) or whatnot.
Good idea guys — I’ll work on that. For now, I have access to all the forums so if someone’s gone for a little bit, let me know and I can take care of that forum.

Wa1ter,
Any requests for additional forums??

Is this a rebirth of Eurotrip?
For some reason this site has been really, really slow the past few days. Opening one post seems to be snail-paced. I haven’t really been posting cause it takes forever to even open up anything to read.
Is anyone else having any similar problems? It’s really starting to annoy me, and it’s not the first time this has happened to me with this site. Every other site is working normally so it can’t be a problem with my connection.
Nivid
I have the exact same problem. (Rebirth apparently takes time.)
Also, this might just be my situation, but I can only use Mozilla for Eurotrip.
I can load and look at Eurotrip with Internet Explorer, but if I try to reply with IE, Windows closes down.
I think it has something to do with my firewall, but I really don’t know for sure.
Nah, anything you need covered will be fine MiM.
I always use Mozilla anyway, but I think I can use both. This just loaded up quicker so maybe it’s fixed. Let’s hope anyway.
Yup, it’s all fixed up now……
Nevermind, I was wrong. It’s back to it’s old slow tricks now.
For me, it is not slow as molasses, but it is definitely slow to load, and slow to let you do much of anything.
I have noticed the slow speed off and on as well. Thanks for the info — we just emailed the tech guys today.
Will keep you informed.
Still working on getting the rest of the forums moderated — for now I’m taking care of the un-moded ones. cheers.

It’s back to it’s old self now. I’m not sure why it fluctuates like that.
It was slow enough before that I didn’t even look at any posts, cause it would take me way to long to even open one, let alone reply to it.
Let’s hope things stay like they are now.
Wow, it’s much faster today.
I’m back online again. I was having the same troubles as Cil, not only was it slow, I couldn’t reply because explorer would shut down on me, but it’s working now, yaaaaaayyyyy. Obstacle no. 1 defeated.
