I was hoping to see a little more chatter about this years fest. The board has been a little quiet in recent months. I have made my hotel reservations & have been shopping for flights. My small group of 4 will be coming in from Amsterdam on Sunday (17th) & flying out on Thursay (21st). We have some day trips planned, but expect to spend plenty of time in town enjoying the party. I tried making a reservation at a few tents, but have been shot down. The HB told me to check back in April. I figured if I was able to get a reservation we wouldn’t have trouble getting another 6 people to meet up with us to make it a full 10. If anyone else has any luck with a reservation; we’d be happy/grateful to hook up & toss a few back with you.

Alright, so my friends and I are putting together a week and a half trip to check out parts of Germany and hopefully Prauge. We are going to start it off in Munich, then work over to Prague, and finish up in Berlin. Were trying to get an idea of what there’ll be to do in each city, and if there is anything really worth checking out that is close to those locations. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do, what to see?? Oktoberfest is a must, but we’re just a little unsure about the rest of the trip. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It is looking like I will have to change things up this year, and visit Munchen the 1st week of the O-Fest.. Another guy here at work needs late Sept. off for a family wedding, etc. So, it appears that I will be in town the following dates:

9/19 thru 9/22

4 days is all!

Sunskin, maybe this time we’ll be able to hook up for a beer. I was late to the meeting back in 2000. I’ll be there with a few buddies from 9/17 – 9/21. You gonna be at your usual place (Hotel Jedermann)? I’m staying around the corner near St. Paulkirche. We can set a day/time once we get closer.
Prost!

Cam17: It’s a good time pretty much everywhere! However, I prefer hanging-out in the Paulaner, Augustiner, Hofbrau, and Hacker-Pschorr zelt’s. Also, the WeinZelt is one of my favorite spots. They have a great outside/inside bar, with heaters over the outside picnic-style tables, if needed. Also, the WeinZelt always has one of the best bands.

As of right now I am planning on going again for about 3 weeks to europe not sure which week I will spend in Munchen but at least one of them will be. Don’t hold me to it as the military has ways of screwing me around but as of right now my schedule is clear. Hopefully I can meet up with some of you this year….it will be my 4th.

Booked our flight a week ago & just in time too. We’re flying into Amsterdam & out of Munich. We paid $650 including taxes/fees, which isn’t bad for non-stop flights both ways. I had been watching this fare for the past 6 months & the cheapest I saw it was $624 back in Feb. The fare has gone to $775 in the past week.
Looking forward to hooking up with Sunskin. The first maß is on me brother.

I finally was approved for the time off at work and booked my tickets this morning. I arrive in Munich Friday September 22nd. Unfortunately I cannot find any hostels with beds available for Friday and Saturday night (9/22 and 9/23). I have tried all of the big name websites for hostel booking (i think) but no luck. I am meeting some people there on Sunday and have that week booked at a hotel.

any ideas or recommendations for a cheap hostel for the weekend?

Yes Espo I will be in Munich over the weekend of the 21st to 23rd. It looks like we’ll be in the Lowenbrau tent on the 23rd and I’ve managed to secure 2 tables in the gallery of the Hippodrom tent for the 12.00 – 3.30 PM session on Friday the 22nd. We booked 2 tables of 8 on the Friday – and as there are only 14 of us – if anyone is interested in sharing one of the tables please let me know. I’ve paid the Hippodrom for 16 beer vouchers (X2) and a half chicken, so if 2 of you want to pitch up and join us at 12PM on the 22nd let me know, and we’ll sort out the money on the day. I haven’t been able to get a tent reservation from 4PM onwards on the Friday, but am interested in knowing who’s planning on being where.

Best wishes,
Mark Underwood

I was there for the opening last year and unless you have reserved seats get there for the opening of the beer tents. Also I would take a pack of cards cause whilst you may get in early in the morning there is no beer until about midday (cant remember the exact time) as there is the ceremoial tapping of the keg. So it is always good to have a pack of cards to pass away the time.

The beer is fantastic, no additives and no preservatives and therefore no hangover. The best feeling in the world waking up the next morning with a clear head and a renewed thirst for beer.

If I’m not mistaken, opening day is Saturday the 16th. I too, will be arriving on Sunday & know it’s gonna be packed, but patience is a virtue & we all should be prepared to wait. If you’re with a larger group 4-6 people then you may have to split up, because finding a table for all 6 may be impossible. Finding a spot for 2 shouldn’t be a major problem.

i’m going to be at oktoberfest for the first time as part of backpacking trip. I didn’t realize how early one had to book hostels in Munich for this but i managed to get reserve at Wombats sept 27th- 28th. I’m really nieve about this event, so i was wondering what this issue of reserving tables is all about. will i need to find people to go with in a group? what else can i expect concerning prices, locations, etc.? any response would be helpful. thanks.

In my experience it is really difficult to reserve a table. All tables are booked well in advance, but only from the afternoon onwards iirc.

It is mainly corporates that reserve tables. You must pay in advance and you must purchase a plate of roasted chicken and 2 litres of bier per person (for the whole table)

Also try to avoid trying to fnd a table in large groups – you will be lucky to get 1 or 2 places free at any given table.

The Hofbrau tent is the ONLY place you can get a bier without sitting down – in the area right in front of the bandstand – affectionately known as the ‘pig pen’ for obvious reason – but it is massively good fun.

All the tents are good and I would say that all the bier is good (some tents/biers better than others, but still good – the best imho is the Augustiner Festzelt).

My advice? Get there early – about 10ish. Take a steady pace and you might be lucky to stay at the same table all day.

If the weather is good outside is also fun..

Above all – enjoy yourself – make some new friends and drink some of the best bier in the world

Thanks Sunskin, it’s good to be back

Sarah and the kids are great. Joe is now 10 and Jessica 7! Time flies!

We are getting excited as we are off on our summer holidays on the 29th of June for 2 weeks. We are going to Portugal – good bier (Super Bock, Sagres and Crystal) but not as good as any of the brews in Muenchen!

Anyway I am REALLY excited about Munich this year. I thought that it was about time I got some lederhosen (bundlerhosen actually – the longer below the knee ones). I am ordering them next week from a shop in Munich – to be delivered to me in the UK. Cant wait!!!!

Yes, I think you can get a good "authentic pair" from a shop or two in the Munchen City Centre for 150 pds or less. However, they might charge you 25 EUR for damn shipping!

This spirits co. on the web charged me about 22 EUR to ship one (1) single bottle of expensive brandy from the London area to Munchen last December.

This will be my first Oktoberfest and I’m soooo psyched!
I’ll be staying at Wombats hostel from the 18th to the 22nd.
Has anyone stayed here before?
I’m flying in from NY and traveling from Munich to Freiburg to Bern to Paris to Brussels to Koln to Berlin. Never really done anything like this before, and I cant wait!

Cheers

Hello everyone,

Brand new to this place, and pretty fresh to Munich as well. This is going to be our second trip to Oktoberfest – there are 4 of us total from Chicago. We got addicted last year and had to come back. We are there from 09/22 – 09/26. We have had no luck with any table reservations, but that didn’t seem to hurt us last year. We would love to meet up with any of you for a bier….

Welcome to the form CR. As we get closer to September, people will be making plans to hook up. Unfortunately, I will have left on the 21st, but other eurotrippers will be around when you’re in town. Keep checking back here for updates. Also, I know there’s a forum over at www.oktoberfest.de & some people over there are making plans to get a group together. You may want to check it out. Good luck & have a great time this year!

It’s getting so close, and the more I flip around the tube and catch Samantha Brown or Rick Steves, I can hardly wait to see what all this is about!!
My sister and I are going over there for the last few days of Oktoberfest(I think last day or two of September into October)—wondering if the festival is any different then versus earlier?

My other question with the whole reserving a table thing is—if you simply sit at a table early on in the day you can stay? I’m venturing a guess that there are many places to mingle but I was just wondering about the logistics on that.
Vielen Danke!

Welcome all

Don’t worry about the reservations people. I mean it. All of the tables that can be reserved ARE reserved aleady. You WILL get a seat and you WILL get a bier if you plan. Tables can only be booked from the afternoon onwards. The tents are pretty much empty in the mornings (but fill quickly upto noon)

Remember that there will be 6 million people over the 16 days! That means that there will be between 300,000 and 400,000 people in the fest grounds at any one time! The place WILL be packed but that is part of the fun.

My advice is get in early (about 10ish) and take a steady pace. If you have a really big group head to the Hofbrau Festzelt (big yellow and blue tent) and stand in front of the bandstand (as far as I am aware, the only place you can get a bier without a seat).

Also remember that everyone is there for pretty much the same thing so things get a bit looser in the evenings – people get drunk, lost, leave etc so you will get a table at some point….

But saying that about 3 years ago we did not plan all that well and there is nothing worse than traipsing around biertent after biertent trying to find a table for 6/7/8 people to sit down at….

Also watch out for bad weather – they shut the doors to the tents and operate a kind of 1 out 1 in policy….

Most of all enjoy yourselves! lots of bier = big party and you cant get much better than a quarter of a million people getting pi**ed up at the same time!

I agree completely with TonyB on this matter. It is a waste of time, cash, and a bit too constricting to reserve a table. Unless you are a local, and have 9 to 14 others who plan on sitting in one spot for 6 to 8 hrs, do not watse your time. You are better-off getting to the tents around lunch time (weekdays), finding a spot, and enjoying yourselves.

Unless he skips a few yrs, TonyB, aks The Master of Oktoberfest amongst Eurotrippers,,, he will remain about 5 ahead of me. However, my next trip will make it an even Ten Weis’n events!

Well said TonyB & Sunskin. Ya just gotta get in there & adapt. If you can’t find enough seats for your group; then split up into smaller units. I found my best experiences have been when I was either by myself or with one of my buddies. You meet so many cool people that you soon forget the rest of your friends are either on the other side of the tent or in a totally different tent. Make the best of what can be an outrageously overcrowded event. It’s all what you make of it.
