Sunskin..what happened to the Jedermann? You’re like the Jefferson’s…‘movin on up to the east side’
I, too will be arriving the morning of the 17th & staying 4 nights. I’ll wait for you to post your cell #. Will you still be using that pub on corner of Schwanthaler & Herman-Lingg strasse (#88) as a meeting place? Not that it matters much, but that’s right around the corner from our hotel @ St Paul Strasse. Whatever the meeting place..I’m psyched we’ll be able to hook up this year.
85 days & counting
Hey there! Just returned from a two month Europe trip, and ended up spending quite a bit of time in Munich. I stayed at four locations in Munich, including the Wombats. This hostel was by far superior to all the rest! Have fun!
Danke Catt.
ESPO: The Jedermann is a nice location, but I always end-up spending half my time in the City Centre, along the Marienplatz, etc. That in mind; I have decided to stay near that area, and just walk back & forth to the Fest grounds. Last year, we stayed two nights above my friends pub on Schwanthaler, two nights a few blocks away at a 3-star place, then the final night in style at the Excelsior – across from the Hauptbahnhof. This time around, I will be staying at a really nice place, but my AMEX PTS points are allowing me a free upgrade, plus one free night. So, I am saving about $500 USD..
MunichBeerBoy
Yes indeed sir, # 88 Schwanthaler Strasse is always a good meeting place, as it is on the corner of Herman-Lingg str, adjacent to St. Paul’s Kirche.
MunichBeerBoy
Thanks Catt! Good to know that I won’t be staying in a hovel.
Sunskin,
I am not sure if I will be in Munich for Oktoberfest or not, but I do know that I will be there again in a month. Do you have any recomendations on local bars? Not a club, but a bar with some character? Thanks! Catt
Sunskin….where in Germany are you from?
Catt, try these….hope they help!

Thank you again for the info. I wasn’t really concerned with the reservation situation, rather if we stood a chance at getting to sit at a table at all and simply sizing up just how crowded things would be (and, yes, I realize—-very crowded). Will anyone be going toward the end?
(Still excited enough to practically pee my pants!)
ESPO,
Thank you much! Those links are great!
My pleasure Catt, glad I could help. Have a great time in Munchen!
Catt: I was born in Detroit, but have lived in Stuttgart & Munich for a total of three + years. Also, I have been back to Munchen at least 11 times since moving back to the U.S. in 1987. It is not only my 2nd home, but my father’s grandfather is from Nord Deutschland. He & his family moved to Michigan between 1901 & 1903… I am 100% Germany (Kaiser) on my father’s side, and 75% Irish on mom’s side. That may explain my love for a certain kind of malt beverage….

Hey all!
I am taking my first solo trip to Europe this September (travelled to Paris for a week with some friends a few years ago — but we stayed in a hotel, doesn’t count.
) and spending the first weekend of Oktoberfest in Munich!
For those who’ve been before, I’ve heard the tents have different "characters" or atmospheres. I’m planning on getting there early on Saturday and Sunday to stake out a spot, but I don’t know which tent I should angle for! Will it make much of a difference? What are the different tents like?
Kerry_Jean, here’s a great webite for info on the individual tents. http://www.oktoberfe…
No matter which tent..the atmosphere is festive & inviting. Some tents are more rowdy than others. Personally, I like to move around spending some time in each/most; sampling the different beers & enjoying the variation in theme/energy.
Ditto for me. Last year, we moved back & forth between the Hacker-Pschorr brau zelt, the Augustiner, Weinzelt, and Paulaner tents… Had a pretty good time in each one, and we did enjoy two days of really great weather, and grabbed an outside table for a couple of hours..

Only 73 days, 2 hrs, 38 mins to go!
MunichBeerBoy
The summer is flying by. This isn’t a bad thing since I’m anxious to get back to Munchen. Looking forward to meeting up with you Mike.
Prost!
Looking forward to it as well sir. Only 71 more days!

Hi Sunskin,
You mentioned in this forum about a travelling phone…what kind do you use? Is it expensive? I will be backpacking in Sept for 2 months to Britain, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Ital…and would like to have a phone on me for emergencies and for ppl to reach me. I have an unlocked GSM phone that I could pop a sim card into. Do you have a suggestions as to what is the most inexpensive way to have a cell phone on me?
Also, I am currently planning to make a detour to Oktoberfest..but will only be able to catch the last week of it..will it be worth going to? Also…I do not drink beer..are there other alternatives? Is is worth going if I’m a non-beer drinker?
Thank you kindly!
It is a bit expensive, but not too bad. You just have to keep your overseas conversations short & sweet at approx. $1.00 (USD) per minute. However, the longer you rent, the better rates they have, etc.
See: www.travelcell.com
They mail it right to your house with a fully charge battery, instructions, the latest GPS technology, rate plans, Euro standard wall-charger, etc. Also, they send you a return FedEx box with postage paid, etc.
My friend (Sam) has been to a couple of fests, and he hates bier! (I found it hard to physically type that last sentence!),…… He drank Asbach(German Brandy & cola), and had a real good time…
MunichBeerBoy
Thanks for the info Sunskin…
I am still trying to decide whether to bring a phone or not. It would probably cost more to rent one versus buying a sim card.
I emailed Virgin mobile in the UK and a sim card costs £10. The rates are horrendous..but I’ll only be using it for emergencies. I’ve emailed them with loads of questions..so we’ll see!
I look forward to making the detour to Munich then!
Not to scare you away,,, but I did hear of a few people having difficulties with SIM cards a couple of years ago while in Munchen. However, they are more cost-friendly..
MunichBeerBoy
uh oh…am I a little too late in booking an accomodation? Do any of you have suggestions as to where I should try to see if they still have room? I am looking for a hostel that’s not too far off from the festival. Thanks!
Try the following:
www.4Umunchen.com
Or: Hotel Amba
Pensionen Seibel
Hotel Jedermann
Hotel Europa
Hotel Astor

SS: What days do you want to come to Munchen? I would recommend something during the week…

ESPO, my friends and I will be at the event from the 15th to the 19th. Unfortunately, my flight doesn’t land until 6p.m. Saturday evening. I was wondering, what do you think my chances are of being able to make it over to the event and possibly having a beer or two? I know it’s the first night, so I’m expecting nothing but craziness. Any help/advice would be appreciated!!
If I may field this one sir…
Surfs80: If you land at 1800 hrs, get thru German Security chkpoint, etc. within say 20 mins, then jump-on the S8 train to the Hauptbahnhof or Theresienweise exit… You could be walking in a bier tent at approximately 1930 hrs. The train ride is about 40 to 44 mins…
However, on a Saturday night, things will be quite full at that time. The Hofbrau & Hippodrom doors may even be shut. Do not fret! I would walk-around and get a table outside the Paulaner or Weinzelt… Still alot of fun!
After that, walk past the St. Paul’s Cathedral, and meet-up with Eurotrippers at #88 Schwanthaler strasse – corner of Herman-Lingg & Schwanthaler str.
PROST!
MunichBeerBoy
Now that sounds like a plan. Nice job Sunskin!
Der Countdown zum 173. Oktoberfest: 52 Tage, 0 Stunden und 35 Minuten
MunichBeerBoy
Right on, thanks Sunskin. Looking forward to meeting up with all of you guys for a beer!! See you soon!
i’ll be there from the 18th to the 20th, staying at Meininger City Hostel. anyone else gonna be there? thanks for all the info about when to be where.
Cuda360: The usual meeting place is at the corner of Herman-Lingg & Schwanthaler (#88) strasse. It’s right on the corner, located only about 100 meters from St. Paul’s Cathedral, and 250 meters from the rear entrance of the O-Fest (Theresienweise) grounds. I will be there from Sept. 16 thru 20th as well!
Also, I will be posting my travel (GPS) cell # here on either 9/14 or 9/15… Keep posting and stay in-touch folks!

Another good spot, possible with rooms left:
A&O Hostel
Bayerstrasse 75
Munich,

* Located between the Hauptbahnhof & O-Fest grounds. Easy walking-distance…

Just found this site on the internet randomly and am so happy to have found it! I’m backpacking/couchsurfing/possibly camping through europe for 2 1/2 months and will be at Oktoberfest, like the rest of you lucky backpackers! We’re not sure exactly what dates are the best to go so if anyone has any advice, please pass it along. Also where can we get reasonable accomodations so late? Any help would be greatly appreciated….other than that if anyone wants to meet up for a few pints in oktoberfest, lemme know!
Please see the posting on the subject right above/below this one. I just updated it with some good accomodation tips, etc. It will be difficult to get a room in the City Centre this late in the game.
MunichBeerBoy
ESPO: I have managed to "dust-off" the cob-webs from my friend in Detroit’s (Bob M.) Passport. He has not been to Europe or the Fest since 1998, as he was very sick in 2000, and could not join me. So, I will have friend staying with me at the Bayerischer Hof. It’s August now, so the countdown is really getting short!!!
MunichBeerBoy
SS: Excellent!! It’s great to have your friends around at the fest. I’ll be with 3 of my best buds, which is going to be great. We’ll be arriving via overnight train from Amsterdam on 9/17. We’re staying at the Hotel St. Paul a few blocks from the fest & very close to #88 Schwanthaler. I’ll talk with you soon.
Prost!
Oktoberfest Countdown: 43 Days, 16 hours und 13 minutes
Great! Bob is flying-in from Schilpol(AMS), and I am flying-in from Atlanta(ATL) into MUC. I will be there one hour before Bob, but we plan on being in the City Centre no later than 1000 hrs on 9/17/06.. That means we’ll be at the fest at noon!
MunichBeerBoy
Hello everyone. I’m really new to this place so I have been learning a lot, thanks to all of you for the great tips. This will be our second trip, and myself and 3 friends will be there from 9/22 – 9/26. We are staying at the Europaischer Hof (anyone heard anything about this place?) – apparently it’s quite close to the Weisn. We are looking forward to meeting some great people and drinking some great beer. Anyone in town during these dates who wants to meet up for a beer? It would be great to meet some of the contributors to this site. Thanks again for all the tips and looking forward to the trip!!!
ESPO and I shall miss you by a day Chicago… However, you will be there during the same time frame as TonyB, Gunter, and their merry band of loonatics!!
Only 30 days to go… The magic number is indeed shrinking!
MunichBeerBoy
Sunskin, when are you usually at that pub (mornings..afternoons..evenings)? Last time I missed you, because I was out of town on day trips & wouldn’t get back into town until early evening. I want to be sure I leave some time open to hook up with you. Make sure you post your cell# so I can get in touch with you. Prost my friend..we’re almost home!!
ESPO: It’s not going to be a problem reaching me any longer, because I have been carrying a travel cell (GPS) phone the last couple of yrs. I will have my new(temp) cell number on or before 9/15/06. I will get it to ya ASAP! I try to always remember to keep it on ring & vibrate, as it gets loud in the tents.
However, I am usually at the Pub on Schwanthaler (#88) after the bier zelt’s close (about 2230 to 2300 hrs) each nite. It’s on my way back to the hotel (near Frauenkirche & Marienplatz) – so I will definately be stopping there Sunday, Monday, & Tues. evenings. Otherwise; when needed, I always meet-up with Eurotrippers there at lunch time on weekdays (1130 to noon time frame), then walk-over together to a bier tent, etc. On weekends, shich will only include a single Sunday this year, we meet-up perhaps a bit earlier (1030 a.m.)…. Everyone keep posted!
Also, if anyone wants to meet-up at my hotel (Bayerischer Hof) in the morning’s or late nights, that will be no problem… This hotel has everything, including 7 bars, 4 restaurants, and a Jazz & Comedy Club. The night club does not even open till 2200 hrs, and doesn’t close till 0300 hrs… Nice!

A Forum after my own heart…everyone talking about Oktoberfest and eagerly anticipating 9/16! Munich, beer, Oktoberfest. Doesn’t get much better than that, eh?
I’ll be celebrating my 20th fest this year, guys. Will be there 9/16 to 9/22. Guess I’ll be 3 sheets to the wind this time next month and loving every minute of it!
Crews: This will be #11 for me! Look for postings, cell #, and meet-up times at the Pub on the corner of Schwanthaler (#88) & Herman-Lingg strasse on this board. ESPO and I will be there the same dates as you!
MunichBeerBoy
You keep referring to a Pub on the corner of Schwanthaler and Hermannling Str. Is that the name of it? The Pub? I know this area very well because we have always stayed very close to the Wies’n but am not familiar with "the pub".
The bldg. is actually # 88 Schwanthaler str. The entrance is just a few feet from the corner of Herman-Lingg str, just around the corner from St. Pauls Cathedral. It is called Schwanthaler Brauwastl, and sits on the 1st floor, just below the Pensionen. You cannot miss it at night(during the Fest), as the place is always packed, people drunk & dancing, etc.
MunichBeerBoy
We’ll have to look for it then. We leave the US on 9/12 (our gateway is Atlanta also). We’ll be leasing a phone for our visit to Munich too. It should be very handy when friends get stuck outside and need to get in! We’ll be in the Lowenbrau every day – all day. We have so many friends over there now – after all these years – and we see most of them every year too. It’s always fun meeting new ones though too!
Crews: Sounds like a plan! We hop-around a bit, going in & out of the Paulaner & Augustiner zelten, and perhaps the Weinzelt.
