Overnight train costs (Budapest-Prague, Prague-Vienna-Florence)? Do you recommend them?
Fri, 07/24/2009 - 00:27
Hello everyone!
I’m Luis from México. I’m very happy because in mid-August I’ll be living a personal dream of mine of traveling Europe and living in Budapest for the next 5 months!
I am in the process of deciding which is the best way of traveling through the following cities I want to get to know in the first days in Europe: Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Florence, Bratislavia and Venice.
Does anyone of you guys know approximately how much does it cost the overnight train from Venice-Vienna, Florence-Venice, Budapest-Prague, Prague-Florence?? Or any other combination of these cities that I could travel at night in order to make better use of my limited time.
Also considering buying an over $400.00 USD eurorail pass to make things easier probably when traveling to these cities.
Thank you very much! Your help would be really valuable for me.
Looking forward to visiting these cities and its amazing people!!
Regards,
-Luis

I would not recommend an overnight train for Florence-Venice as the train ride is less than 3 hours.
How are you planning to use a eurail pass for a 5 month trip? Are you doing most of your travel in a two month (or shorter period) and staying put in Budapest for 3 months? Which specific pass are you looking at?
I would look for cheap flights for many of these trips. Use www.whichbudget.com to see which budget airlines fly which routes and check our “cheap flights” forum for tons of other tips and suggestions.
Hopefully you’ll get some help from Papyr with the pricing for these tickets. How are you planning to use a eurail pass for a 5 month trip? Are you doing most of your travel in a two month (or shorter period) and staying put in Budapest for 3 months? Which specific pass are you looking at?

Thanks for the tips! Very helpful! I’m considering an overnight train Florence-Venice no more.

First, you have to find out whether there IS a night train between desired cities. The best way to do this is search through the German Rail search engine, which covers all trains in the whole of Europe. I am pretty sure there is a night train from Vienna to Venice (remember, search Wien-Venezia), there is also a nigt train from Prague to Budapest. There is definitely NO train from Prague to Italy, you will have to change at least once in Vienna.
Train from Vienna to Venice should have a special offer called SparNight, where you can buy a ride AND a couchette starting from 29 euros. There is a limited number of places for this price for each date, so buy soon.
Train from Prague to Budapest has a standard price of 66 euros, so I recommend you take a bus, which is only 17.50 euros.

Consider well, since not all the countries accept this. E.g. Slovakia doesnt, which happens to be on the way from Prague to Budapest. With a little effort in searching for discount prices (SparNight in night trains, then cheap buses and cheap airlines) buying point to point tickets may as well be cheaper.
If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
If you only want to search train or bus connection within Czech&Slovakia and/or to neighboring countries, use www.cp.sk or www.idos.cz search engines. For domestic transport, they also show prices.
