Hey all Smile

Im leaving with 2 friends from NYC on the 30th of december and we must be in Florence, Italy by the 5th of Jan. Were thinking of flying into Paris, going to amsterdam for the weekend and then taking a train to rome for a day or two then to Florence.

Any ideas on the best eurail pass and what to do?

Tips?

Cheers

Charlie

I doubt a eurail pass will help for this trip. Point to point tickets will probably be cheaper. I’d look for a cheap flight from Paris or Amsterdam (or somewhere convenient by train to either) to Florence.

You certainly don’t need a set itinerary to buy a train ticket. A rail pass is only more convenient than buying a ticket if you’re taking a train that doesn’t require a reservation. You’ll spend far more time in Italy waiting in long lines to buy “just a reservation” to use with your railpass than you’ll ever spend buying a ticket from the automated (user-friendly in English) kiosk.

Eurorail pass doesn’t make sense for this trip. I don’t think you’ll have much trouble getting space on a train in December either.

Since you don’t have a lot of time I would suggest you fly into Amsterdam, take a short train ride to paris and then depart Paris by plane to Florence (then have your friend drive you down to Rome for at least a day and depart from Rome to home)

I have budgeted $3000

I would reconsider trying to cram Paris, Amsterdam, and Rome into six days, especially when one of those days in Paris is the first day you arrive in Europe.
