Hey folks!

So next March/April 2010 my wife and I are planning a trip to Italy for some relaxing time (and catch a few Serie A games). My question is…

My passport expires in June of 2010. Yes, my trip is before the expiration date but I heard from fellow travelers that sometimes you might get hassled for having a passport about to expire? Is it worth it to just get a new passport? When you do get a new passport what are you supposed to do with your old one? I have a ton of stamps that I would like to keep.. rather not just turn it over to some official.

Thanks for your help!

Karlo

Many counties now require you to have 6 month’s remaining on the passport, other’s 3 months and some just a valid passport. You would be better off contacting your local passport office to be on the safe side.

I am leaving from Glasgow, United Kingdom and traveling for 15 days
Athens, Páros, Náxos, Mýkonos, Náxos, Íos, Thíra
Requesting help with Transport, Nightlife, Food, Sights

I’d vote for “the safe side” and just renew your passport this winter.

Thanks for advice. I will def. go ahead and get a new passport…. which leads to a few more questions:

1) Will I have to turn in my old passport? I would like to keep it just because of all my stamps.

2) Where do I go again to renew? Just the post office?

Anyways… thanks!!

Karlo

Yes, but they send it back. I have all my old ones.

You can download the forms and renew by mail (an original passport requires appearing in person). Check the US State department site.

I’ve known people denied admission to a country on a passport expiry issue so I would certainly get this taken care of before I leave!
