Places in Munich
Tue, 08/02/2005 - 20:23
Hello,
I am looking for information on places to stay in Munich. Obviously, I don’t want to spend a ton of money. Just need someplace safe and clean. Any tips?
All help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Greg

Delfrio,
Thank you SOOOO much for pointing out the obvious. I am not a newbie to the site and HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING. I posted only for people’s reccommendations. I have stayed in Munich 3 times. However, one is booked and the other’s price has increased dramatically.
I am simply seeking tips, or places others have had positive experiences with. The websites all say they provide the best of services. We all know that is simply not true. I had one nightmare experience in Munich and if someone were to post a message such as the one I wrote, I would wholeheartedly recommend they skip it.
So, thanks again for pointing this out to me, even though I do believe I have a grasp on the workings and the purpose of this site.
I assumed we were all here to offer advice and recommendations based upon our experiences. I have done so on a number of occasions. You could have simply ignored the message and be none the worse for wear. But thanks for taking the time to "set" me straight.
Sincerely,
Greg
Hello,
Back again. Have a couple of places here. Wondering if anyone has stayed in either of these. If so, what were your thoughts?
- A&O Hostel
– Meininger City Hostel
Would appreciate any information. Thank you.
Greg
I stayed and loved the Euro Youth Hostel in Munich. It is big, safe, and clean. on the ground floor there is a huge common area with a bar, couches, tables, and a big screen TV. The bar is a great place to meet people and exchange stories and travel eperiences. If you want a hostel with it’s own brand of beer and lots of people around all the time this is the place to go, but if you want a small quiet place to relax i wouldn’t choose this hostel. It’s also in a great location. The owner or owners own a series of hostels throughout europe. Because I liked their Munich place I also stayed in the Salzburg franchise the Yoho Youth Hostel and had a similar experience. i hope that helps.
Hey Greg,
I stayed at A&O in May and although it is a hostel it is much more like a hotel and priced accordingly. We had a beautiful double room with a bathroom and shower right in it, a balcony and even a television. For 2 nights and it cost 120 euro. Although it was the most expensive place that we stayed during our trip it was by far the nicest. Great breakfast (included) every morning, no lockout and only a 5 minute walk from the train station. If you are not concerned with $$$$ then this is your place. Hope this helps and enjoy your trip.
Hey Greg,
This is a message board and the people on it are not your close personal friends. We don’t know how often you have stayed in Munich or where. If you had posted some of that info that you talked about in your second and third post, we could have gotten right to the pertinent information rather than acting like someone who doesn’t know how to use a message board.
Thanks for your sarcastic reply.
re: Meininger City Hostel
I will be there this year for Octoberfest. I have only heard good things…I will let everyone know as soon as I am back but if anyone is interested in the website check it out:

Hello,
On the same block, a two minute walk from the train station are Euro Youth Hostel, Jegers, and Wombats hostels. I have stayed at EYH several times and really enjoyed it for clean rooms, friendly staff, fun bar and atmosphere, etc.
Happy travels
Thanks to everyone for the tips. I am going to check these out. I am hearing good things about the A&O.
Cheers!
Greg
Stay at the Wombat in Munich. Its within walking distance from alot of places, i.e. train station (big plus) but it was also super clean. They had a pretty cool happy hour, nice people – ran more like a hotel then a hostel. But it was super nice. I’d definatley recommend if you go to Munich stay at Wombats.
I stayed at Wombats last week. It’s a great hostel and I definitly recommend it. It’s basically right across from the main train station and maybe 15 mins to Marienplatz.
Euro Youth and Wombats are a step above the rest. They are right next to each other too, so id take my chances and try to get a bed there. If they don`t have one they will help you find one somewhere else.
I stayed at Euro Youth and McBeds (pretty much next door to each other). Both are good location, but McBeds was pretty expensive and really nothing great (this was about 2 years ago, and I think I paid 25EUR for a bed in a dorm. Didn’t have much of a choice though, the entire city was booked solid for that weekend). The Euro Youth is ok though as someone else said.
Anyone know the cost for Wombats?
A 6 bed mixed dorm a week and a half ago at Wombats cost me 22 Euros/night.
Gawsh, Munich is just expensive…
Wow! Thanks Nivid
If you’re on a tight budget, there’s a pretty good campsite in Munich too. It’s called Campingplatz Thalkirchen. It’s near a metro stop so the historic centre, the train station and other places of interest are easy to reach.
I caught that campsite on DVD! Don’t they charge 5 EUR/night? Someone clarify this up with me, thanks.
I stayed there in 2001 so I really don’t know what it costs nowadays. When I stayed there the price was similar to other campsites in the area, but you did have to buy coins to get hot water in the showers (which isn’t unusual in Germany but still I wished they’d told me before I was taking a shower and wondering why there was no hot water).
