Hello Everyone,

I am planning my first eurotrip for next year. I only have 9 days available. I assume 2 days will be spent flying in and out of Europe and the 7 remaining will be spent sightseeing. regarding the budget, I can spend up to $2k plus air tickets, but I would like to keep it under $1,500. I would love to hit Spain, just to see where the old folks are from and the rest is pretty much. Amsterdam is also high on my list. Any suggestions?

It’s possible that 3 of your 9 days will be tied up with TransAtlantic travel. Flying out day 1, arriving jet-lagged and sleep deprived on day 2 (don’t plan on much serious activity on day 2) and day 9 will be entirely taken up with the flight home. 2 cities is probably all you can reasonably handle unless you pick places that are really close together. Look for an “open jaw” flight — into one city and out of another to avoid backtracking to arrival city to catch a roundtrip flight home. Use the multi-city option on flight searches.

Suggestions:
1. Spain — maybe Barcelona and Madrid
2. Amsterdam and one other place — Brussels/Brugges, London, Paris, Lille, Strasbourg are all fast and easy to get to from Amsterdam. You could do arrival day plus 1 and 1/2 days in Amsterdam, then afternoon/ evening train to Brugges, 1 and 1/2 days there, 1/2 day stop in Brussels on your way to Paris and home from Paris. Exhausting, but you can stand it for 9 days.

I would not try to do Spain and someplace in Northern Europe unless the transportation logistics work out just perfectly. You could easily lose a full day of your precious 6 or 7 to transportation. Even flying can kill a whole day with getting to/from airports, 2 hour advance check-in, plus flight time, if the flight’s in the middle of the day. You could do Madrid or Barcelona and an overnight train to Paris.
