Still not at all clear what the sudden problems are with the current site, especially when they didn’t seem to exist until recently.
Anyone advocating a change care to clarify?

Just to respect Don, all problems are listed in Fave places and possibly the pub.

Personally, I’ll always come back here to find out cheap flights info, Don offers invaluable advice and the history of threads here is irreplacable. Besides, I see nothing wrong with this site, so why move ?

Don is the man. I’ll always be here to see his posts.

BTW though I think thats a cool idea for those who want change…it’s admirable (I’ll probably eventually join)….but why flood the favorite places forum? 10 new topics about the move is a bit excessive. It’s there…people will see it…now give it a rest until at least all those topics are pushed to page 2.

Now that people can register..things will get better anyway. All I care about are the forums…not all the dated info. Yeah, this Wandrian guy seems like a moron…but theres a charm in an unmoderated site (as long as new blood is allowed in)…..it’s like certain post-coldwar areas of Berlin..where the artists took over the dilapidated buildings and made them attractions in their own right.

Yes, but you can’t discount the millions of historical posts which contain great information that eurotrip offers and no new site will ever be able to offer. That is why eurotrip will remain popular, until some new site passes the longevity test.

If I want advice on eating a cheeseburger, knitting or not wearing a shirt, I’ll go to the new site. If I want relevant travel/flight info, I’ll come here.

haha, eurotrip has a wealth of information it’s true…but it can be exported and passed on. and moving onwards is what many (but not all) of the people who normally take time to answer people’s questions thoroughly on eurotrip have done.

I agree, keep coming to Don for flight info, he’s a great source.

I know Google offer advert agreements with bloggers these days, and some travel sites give a commission per booking if you link via their booking engine, but I don’t even know if that amount of income would even cover server and bandwith costs. I dont post often but I do come here often to check your posts. I find very useful information and lately I like to read about topics related to flying. Anyway.

I work as a Manager for a Software Company. I have seen people with great ideas but that fail terrible. The key point is marketting. They want to eat the cake before they have it in their hands.

In reality, the cost for hosting is not expensive. What can be expensive is the development of a dynamic website. If you do not need any customization that you can just go and grab some of those generic websites for forums.

Do not consider that much bandwidh. What eats bandwidth is streaming. If you have a site where people will transfer huge files or download music or play videos then bandwidth is your main concern. For a site for forums and posting you will need to have a really huge amount of traffic to suck the bandwidth. And, if that is the case, you are doing so great that you dont have to worry about the cost because you will have enough profit to cover.

If I had the knowledge that you have then I would be thinking about it seriously. You never know… u can be a great success…. also if you just get some extra money then that is cool

One option would be hosting ads for various airlines but they would likely want you to recommend them instead of their competition.
Another is affiliations to other company (amazon, for travel related books, etc) where you’d get paid for every referal that buys something.
Google ads are indeed an option as well.
Either way, it will likely take a while before you make any ‘real’ money but as there are enough options to host your site for free it would mean you wouldn’t lose money either.
