I wasn’t really sure which forum to post this in, but I have a question. I am planning on volunteering on an environmental project in Ibiza, Spain for 6 weeks. Then, I am applying for a 4-8 week language exchange program in either France or Italy. I would like to do some traveling on my own either before or after these programs, but I am not sure what the rules are with visas and what not. I looked on another site and found I could maybe exit the EU to another country for a few days and then re-enter the EU. Is this true? Does anyone have any official resources? Should I contact the embassy? If so, which one? Thanks!

No, you can’t do that (leave and re-enter) because you can only stay 90 out of 180 days. If you are going for longer than 90 days, you have to apply for a schengen visa. Since you’re doing a language exchange program this is probably a little easier for you, since you can probably get a student visa for that.

EU isn’t a border. With Spain, France, and Italy you need to google Schengen Border. For US citizens, it’s 90 in / 90 out — just as Kayling posted.
Could you possibly overstay and not get caught? Yes. Typical risk is fine and/or ban from re-entry. And you’ll need to get a new passport, because any denied entry stamp will create intense scrutiny at every border you later try to cross with that passport.
You can potentially stay in the EU, however. How? Well… UK is not Schengen. US citizens can get up to 6 months to play tourist there. So you could do 90 days in Schengen, 90 days in UK, 90 days back to Schengen, 90 days back to UK. You could also stay in the (few remaining) non-Schengen countries on their allowed tourist days, which typically range 30-90 days depending on the country.

It is possible to get a circulation visa or a long stay visa, either of which allows you to stay for longer than 90 days. I think you have to contact an embassy of a Schengen member-state to find out how to do this.
