From what i read it seams that a person can only stay in a european country for 3 months..if so how could one stay longer? Can you just go visit another country for a week or so and come back and be able to stay in that country for another 3 months

No.
As I understand it (someone out there correct me if I am wrong) this is the deal:
No doubt people do this kind of thing, and some get away with it. If you get caught, what happens to you depends on which country you’re in. And how much time you spend in Schengen countries.
Some stuff about the Schengen Agreement:
http://en.wikipedia….
If you are visiting some place outside the Schengen Agreement, different rules apply.
Depending on how much you mix and match Schengen countries, you could cobble together a longer trip.
Cil’s got it right. Very difficult at best.

Are you US or Canadian citizen? They get 90 days in the combined Schengen Agreement border zone—not 90 per country, but 90 days all together within that single border. You can NOT leave for a day and return with a fresh 90 day tourist allowance—it’s 90 in / 90 out, or not to exceed 90 in a continuous 180 day period. US/Cnd citz get up to 180 days UK combined, 90 Ireland, 90 Switzerland, 90 most other EU countries not yet participating in Schengen border. Check this: http://www.eurotrip…. It will give you a summary of tourist entry allowance, requirements, and penalties based on the countries you input.
If you really want to stay in Europe for more than 3 months at a time just plan smart, stay in the schengen border for your 90 days, then go say the UK for however long, maybe to Ireland for part of it, then after 90 days out of the schengen border (you have now been in Europe for 180 days) you can now re-enter within the border and do whatever!
thank you everyone for the help
