Here is the text of a video taped statement by Osama Bin Laden’s lieutenant Ayman al-Zawahri, broadcast by al-Jazeera television on 4 August 2005.

"As for the British, I tell them that [UK Prime Minister Tony] Blair has brought you destruction in central London, and God willing, will bring more destruction.

O nations of the crusade alliance, we proposed that you at least stop your aggression against the Muslims. The lion of Islam, mujaheed sheikh Osama Bin Laden, may God preserve him, offered you a truce to leave the house of Islam.

Has sheikh Osama Bin Laden not informed you that you will not dream of security until we live it in reality in Palestine and before all infidel armies leave the land of Muhammad, may peace be upon him?

You, however, shed rivers of blood in our land so we exploded volcanoes of anger in your land.

Our message to you is crystal clear: Your salvation will only come in your withdrawal from our land, in stopping the robbing of our oil and resources, and in stopping your support for the corrupt and corrupting leaders.

What you have you seen, O Americans, in New York and Washington and the losses you are having in Afghanistan and Iraq, in spite of all the media blackout, are only the losses of the initial clashes.

If you continue the same policy of aggression against Muslims, God willing, you will see horror that will make you forget what you saw in Vietnam.

The truth which [US President George W] Bush, [US Secretary of State Condoleezza] Rice and [US Defense Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld hide from you is that the only way out from Iraq is immediate withdrawal, and any delay in this decision will only mean more deaths and more losses.

If you don’t leave today, then you shall inevitably leave tomorrow but after scores of thousands of fatalities and double that number of disabled and wounded people.

They are repeating with regard to Iraq the same claims and lies they uttered about Vietnam.

Did they not tell you that they would train the Vietnamese people so that they would run their own affairs themselves, and that they were defending freedom in Vietnam?"

Apparently, they don’t get it that Bush doesn’t respond well to ultimatums.

I’m sure Hope had a reason for posting this. Do you agree with Zawahri or not?

Moddy, I like you man but your knee-jerk crap like that just makes you look kinda stupid.

Do you support Bush or not? I mean you must have had a reason to respond the way you did.

See what I mean?

The reason I posted it was because it was the actual text from his speech. I think people gloss over this all too quickly and just read summaries. How many people actually looked at Osama Bin Laden’s "Letter to America"? Actually reading the words of people who pose real threats doesn’t mean you lend credence to them — it just means that you are acquiring as much information as you can about the situation.

If someone I know is angry with me and wants to hurt me, the first question I’d ask is "Why?" Then I would ask him or her to elaborate and to explain the situation point-by-point.

I feel the same way about this. If someone wants to blow up the city I live in, I’d at least like to hear why. Doesn’t mean I agree, it just means I’m trying to figure out why.

She was simply asked a question and nothing was accused her of her, relax.

Two points in response to this guy’s message:

1.) It’s ridiculous to think that any country ever will NOT pursue its own self-interests. If that means the US, by using all this spreading of democracy language, is really only trying to stabilize an economically very important region of the world(oil), then so be it. In this sense it all boils down to economics. It would be swell if we all had solar cars and heating, etc.. and no need for oil and could build a big fence around the Middle East, but well.., we need oil. There’s no minimizing that. Our history and lifestyle(culture too..) is what it is, so it’s a waste of time and dangerously unrealistic and naive to think it should be otherwise. Furthermore, there is a security issue as well. The Middle East – for whatever reasons – is a breeding ground for hatred and instability, and as such it is a threat to us. By "us" I mean everything from MTV to big greedy corporations(from Bob Geldoff to George Bush, if you like)..

2.) Secondly, however he tries to justify and explain what he’s doing, it CAN NEVER be justified – at least outside of his extremist mindset. Islam has had for a long time now and continues to have a problem in adjusting to modernity(positive and negative aspects included). HE – not us – has built up this polarized view of the world. It is simply not true that the West is hell-bent on murdering Muslims. History is a long and complicated process. It’s not like we can just remove Israel.. Religion is ingorance(at least in my opinion, speaking more diplomatically..), so I’m doubtful of the value of applying Western reason to somehow better "understand" these people. They live off of hate, and if we pulled out of Iraq tomorrow I would imagine they wouldn’t stop wanting to and trying to kill us. It’s THEIR CRUSADE.

Gotta’ run and work..

Positiveman

1) Of course nations act in their own self-interest. The US is acting in its own self-interest. As are the people in this area of the world. The US has the right to adopt a Macchiavellian attitude; people of the Middle East have a right to be upset about this. If you want behave a certain way, you have to take responsibility for the reactions to it.

2) It’s probably true that if the west pulled out of Iraq, this would still continue. It is, in a sense, "their crusade", and I’m not saying any of this can be justified. However, it is in the self-interest of those being threatened to understand the reasoning behind their attacker’s actions.

I don’t think nations act in their own self interest.

It is impossible. The ruling elite does act in their own however, and to continue that, need to make the nation follow along.
