Hi all.
I’ve spent months planning this trip to Europe and I’ve been practically scared out of my wits with some of the things I’ve read on these boards. Then I realized something, there’s no way that europe is going to be more dangerous than other places I’ve been. Now, I’ve been almost mugged in New York, I’ve been stranded in the middle of the night in the ghetto in Oakland. I’ve been peniless in Tijuana (3rd world! Woa!). These are places that are KNOWN for being dangerous, yet we feel safer because at least its the same country, right? (tj’s close enough)
I live in Hollywood, between three hostels. I speculate that Hollywood gets just as many visitors as any euro point of interest. The people who come here, break every rule and suggestion I’ve read on these boards. They wear fanny packs and cameras around their necks and "Hard Rock" shirts, etc.. And these are not all americans, in fact, mostly japanese and german. Why are they so much more confident? I have never, I mean NEVER witnessed/heard of any attacks on tourists. The scavies around here will ask you for change, but not lift your wallet. And these people are waving around their cash like an advertisement!
So I’ve decided to be comfortable. I’m not going to cram a money belt between myself and my low-rise jeans. I’m not going to be in by 6, and I’m not going to avoid the cool parts of town because of paranoia.
I’m not suggesting that we run around like idiots. We all have personal responsibility to deal with.
I’m just glad I made this little break through, because I feel more confident now, and a little more at ease.
