Top 3 Favourite Bands and why?
Tue, 09/27/2005 - 21:12
Hello, What is everyones’ top 3 favourite bands and tell me why you like them.
Mine would be.
1)The Beatles – They have alot of good songs I like, just great music.
2)The Thrills – The lead singers voice is a fruity but there kinda different but they’re consistantly good. I dont know how long they’ll be one of my favourites.
3)The Darkness – Permission to Land is a great CD , I hope their next one will be just as good or better.

……..
….you all suck
well it’s such a loaded question…i mean, how can you exactly explain why something that is SUBJECTIVE is enjoyable unless you move into specifics like lyrics, syncopation, key, melody, two part harmony, etc? i think it’s difficult to pick top 3 and put it out there with reasons valid enuogh to avoid criticism on here.
how bout just asking what songs we’re into right now?
Icbites, nevermind Hope—she tries too hard sometime.
I’d say U2 and the Beatles for sure. I’m not sure about #3. I haven’t been listening to much music lately, but for awhile it was Linkin Park. Then I dug up some old Depeche Mode and got back into them. I dunno.
just explaining to icbites that most of us here have fought over musical tastes enough over the years, so that might explain the lack of response.
The Beatles are and were shite.
she love you yeh, yeah, yeah, yeah! Yeah it’s fucking crap!
The Drakness…. total unoriginal drivel!
Moderatopr, please lock this thread!
Nice to see that folk have got their priorities right, like logging onto E/T first to chastise newbies for inane music threads instead of replying to email
i’m still trying to weed through what you wrote
bastard
…so you can polish off a Harry Potter book in half an evening but my emails give you problems ?
Aye right!
Damage is done, lying about it won’t help!
difficult question to answer, but i’ll be kind and do my best
shane macgowan writes the most beautiful lyrics and it’s a bonus that his voice does strange things to me.
……….
sorry, it’s just impossible to pick only three.
btw i’ve never heard of 2 out of those 3 bands you listed…
OH the tragically hip will always hold a special place in my heart, think they’re mostly a canadian obsession
Admit it, it’s his looks that do strange things to you
well i wouldn’t be opposed.
Urrgh!
Yes, Nobody ever liked the Beatles…sure.
and the Darkness???
There trying to bring back 70’s rock, you have to have testicles to do that? they only have one album out right now and it rocks =)
There Second one will be sooo good. mark my words
The Beatles
Yes
Weather Report
‘Nuff said
Yawn, nobody wants rock, the 70’s guys are still around. Do you wear spandex pants to school Batman? Sad, very sad !
So? Your big brother is in the band? That don’t impress me much.
Get a life, you hippy headed loser !
the beatles
the doors
doesnt seem to fit in the mix here but sublime
Pogues
Split Enz
Teenage Fanclub
Apart form some danish bands ? … hmmm … I seem to be old school ….
1) Dire Straits. Second to none.
2) Runrig (scottish folk-rock)
3 Great Big Sea (canadian Newfoundland-rock)
BTW bands like Pogues (Ireland), Madness (England) and Die Tote Hosen (german punk-rock) are on the top 10 as well – they’re hilarious
Kierans
I am old school too.
I enjoy all three of those bands. Have seen Great Big Sea and Mark Knopfler in concert recently, and Dire Straits years ago. Are you at all familiar with Ashley McIsaac?
All time favorites are Warren Zevon and Neil Young and these days have been listening to the White Stripes a lot.
If nobody likes rock, why are still the 70’s guys still around?, and I would rather have something new and fresh insted of some 80 year old guys playing the same old stuff that made them popular in the first place.
Hey, At least my post makes sence if you think about it.
Most bands dont reach their peak untill later on, how many bands do you know that have there first album as their best one?
The cultural divide today is "red or blue?". A generation ago it was "Beatles or Elvis?".
Toto Coelo, now fuck off!
rap is crap…
The Herr’s top 3 Favourite Bands:
1.) Transvision Vamp
2.) Die Artze
3.) Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Why???? Fuck y’all why!!!!!!!!! Just because!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paris, Nice, Arles, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Madrid
My 2 favorite are Zero7 and Stereolab, I’m not sure who my 3rd would be too many contestants for 3rd prize. I would say though that I think Air and Radiohead are probably the most influential groups that have come out in the last 10-15 years. I think they’ll go down as being something like this generation’s Pink Floyd. If you like Pink Floyd, pick up Air’s album Virgin Suicides, it’s sounds the way floyd would’ve sounded if transported from the 60s straight to the 21st century.
Anyone like Sigur Ros?
I like your taste. Air and ‘lab especially.
Cool people call it ‘lab.
Well, I hope not, I just made that up.
And I saw Air and ‘lab play together last summer! Air played with a full orchestra as their backup. One of the most amazing shows I’d EVER seen! Especially with all the light effects going on. When Air played ‘Venus’ with the symphony behind them, it damn near gave me goosebumps.
Pure pish !!!
Jeff Tweedy in all his reincarnations – because he keeps on changing
Damien Jurado – because he writes the best songs about suffering and has a distinctive singing style
M. Ward – because he is a fabulous acoustic guitar player and his voice is enchanting.
1. Led Zeppelin – Most diversely talented(studio) band ever…
2. Soundgarden – Chris Cornell is the best vocalist the past 15 yrs.
3. Queen – Perhaps the best live band ever…
MunichBeerBoy
AMEN brother!
Dave Matthews Band – love the sound, vocals and orginality, and it makes me feel good!!
Jeff Buckley – Grace is my ultimate song.
Morcheeba/Air/Moby – just love them peorid. Great to entertain too!!!
Not exactly all bands, but tough!!
Fleetwood Mac – my all-time favorite as I happen to be a big fan of 70’s rock, and they are still making good music
Led Zeppelin – the ultimate in rock
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young – Awesome harmonies, put on a great live show as old as they are, even though Neil isn’t looking so great these days.
Def Leppard- Great performers singers and great music
Bon Jovi- COme on what’s not too like about Jon he’s sexxxy as hell and I’d leave my man for him any day…
Bad religion- Just the cream of the crop…
This list reads like the shittiest bands ever thread not the best!
My list
XTC
Jesus Jones
Blue Tones
The three greatest ‘lost’ bands of their generation.
Def Leppard, for fuck sake, they are fucking rubbish! Sold 80 million ablums but when you speak to any rockers or metal freaks nobody actually owns any of their records! What does that tell you ??
All these lists are just popular commericalism!
Bands that I’m puzzled didn’t get a mention:
Depeche Mode
The Smiths
Oasis
The Spice Girls (I jest)
Primal Scream
The Fall
ZZ Top (I jest again)
The Skids
I could go on…. but
I like the Smiths and XTC. (Though sometimes the Smiths are awfully depressing.) I also like the Decemberists and Calexico.
But they are not my favorites.
It’s funny when some people support a band, and then when the band becomes commercially successful, ohmygod they’ve sold out.
The whole marketing thing was never easy, but it has now become ridiculous, the record companies are not supportive let alone generous to bands.
I remember when ZZTop was just three unknown guys from Texas. I liked them then and I still like them. I suppose I tend to enjoy musicians who work hard and enjoy their craft but do not take themselves too seriously.
Cil,
like sport, money ruins music… well known fact.
Thing is about XTC, they didn’t have a good relationship with Virgin but had enough cult support that they were allowed to record and not tour (and in some cases not sell a lot of records)
You’d be amazed at how much good music ‘the industry’ has deprived us of.
Anyway, back to the crux of it, fame, money see bands wilt in the vast majority of cases to either produce crap or the work dries up.
most of the crap that’s released now has been done before! maybe it’s the reason why i’m unable to list any current bands in my top picks.
feeeeeeeeeed the wooorrrrrrrrrllllllldddddddd
oh and bryan adams and corey heart both top my list! how can you go wrong with lyrics such as these:
ull up your sox you’re the boy in the box"
"
Jboy makes a good point about Def Lepard. One thing I can say about them is that they did one great album… Pyromania in 1981 (I think) – was a big seller, and had at least 5 good songs on it. Otherwise, they pretty much stink.
MunichBeerBoy
Without question, at least in the Rock & Roll world… Many bands work for so long, and pay such great attention to detail, massing their very best songs, etc. – They often cannot duplicate their debut, and/or 2nd albumns. For example: Boston’s self-titled first LP to this day is 4th on the all-time sales list. They made another LP (Don’t Look Back), but that was 7 years later, and it was pretty good, but nowhere near as good as the first one. Another 70’s band that enjoyed alot of success – Foreigner, had 3 or 4 very good albumns (Head Games, Double Vision, & "4"
, but nothing could touch their self-titled first LP with a stick! Songs like Starrider, Cold as Ice, Headknocker, Feels Like the First Time, and the list goes on… Fleetwood Mac had a very good debut albumn, but hit ultimate platinum status & pay-dirt with their second release – "Rumors" in 1976. I believe that albumn is # 6 or # 7 all-time in sales. Ditto for the Eagles, Kansas, and Styx. They had so-so debut LP’s, but become huge stars with their respective 2nd and third releases, in the mid to late 1970’s… Many of these 70’s bands simply could not duplicate what they did on their 1st three LP’s, especially in the 1980’s… The bands that set themselves apart, with longevity and several very good albumns, are the kings of rock for just that reason. Although in my personal opinion, the Rolling Stones have too many albumns out there – you have to give them credit for their many, many (Bill Wyman was born in 1936!) years of touring, and good songs. While they have released some real crap, the Stones put-out several great LP’s from 1966 to 1973, and came back with one of their best in "Some Girls" in 1977… Led Zeppelin and The Who made at least 6 or 7 really quality albumns from 1967 to 1975…
Bad Company released perhaps 3 very good albumns, but their best (by far) was their debut LP in 1973 (Bad Co.), and they followed in 1975 with STraight Shooter, another classic release.
Look at Gary Wright… He released an absolutely fantastic, perhaps top 20 LP pf all-time in 1974, called "The Dream Weaver", and never did anything remotely good after that… Ditto for Billy Squier, who had six monster hits on his debut release, and two or three more on LP #2, but then disappeared into thin air!
Perhaps the best argument for bands "shooting their talent wad" early-on is Aerosmith… If you really listen to their first three LP’s, man – what powerful, well-written and awsome stuff! Especially the first LP "Featuring Dream On", "Rocks", and "Toys in the Attic"… The first LP (1973) is easily their best. Granted, they have had several big sellers, and even about 8 chart-busting (pop & rock) hits since 1985, but they were not these sissy "ballad" writers and girly movie soundtrack experts in the mid70’s, like they are today. Aerosmith definately did their best work from 1973 to 1978 – when they were on the hard drugs and whiskey!
MunichBeerBoy
What has 9 arms and sucks?
Def Leppard
What doesn’t suck you ask?
Towa Tei!
^—Explain please.
Great musician!
Nirvana – presentation over substance, but no other band delivers with so much emotion.
Oasis – simple yet powerful, definately maybe is one of the greatest albums of all time.
Prince – a master musician, underrated guitar genius
The Arcade Fire are another great band
