Hi all! It’s great I found this forum, as most website on train transport are confusing.

I bought a 4 country eurail pass through eurail.com and I am trying to make reservations for two trains:

1. Paris – Amsterdam (TGV connection to Belgium) for Dec 29th, 2010, 4.30 pm (wednesday)

2. Amsterdam – Zurich (CityNightLine), overnight train on Jan 2nd (Sunday night)

I am unable to reserve these trains online! I land in Europe on the 29th only. Do you think –

1. I can reserve the TGV train at the CDG airport itself? I have about 3-4 hours after I land in CDG.

2. This is a sunday night train, and I am sure it will be a little crowded because it’s the weekend after New Year’s and I expect everyone to be partying in Amsterdam. So, is reserving it 2-3 days in advance sufficient?

3. Alternately, If I am unable to reserve the TGV train, will they just let me stand on the train and go? It’s just a few hours of train journey.

4. Is it true that they have only a quota of reservations for EURail pass holders? Is it a fixed or fluctuating quota.

5. I have friends in Europe. Can they buy me a reservation and post it? Do they need to see me EURail pass/Passport to purchase the reservation, or is it just some nameless ticket?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

You should be able to buy these reservations at any major train station — and they will cost significantly less that way. Where (which websites) have you tried to buy these reservations on-line????

1. Yes
2. Why don’t you buy this one at the CDG station (or one of the other Paris train stations while you’re there), too?
3. No. If a train requires a reservation (TGV and Thalys trains do) you must have one to board the train.
4. Yes and no. There is a “quota” of special “passholder fare” reservations on Thalys trains. These cost slightly less than the regular reservations. If they sell out you can still buy a regular priced reservation.
5. Yes they can buy it for you. There isn’t a name on a reservation. It may be possible for them to buy a paperless reservation and just e-mail you a code number so you can print it yourself at a kiosk at the train station.

Thank you,

my only concern was running out of reservations on the train because it’s close to New Year’s and could be packed with tourists Smile

I assume you must be trying to connect from CDG to the Thalys train that leaves Paris Nord at 17:25???? I don’t see a Thalys train at 16:30. There’s another Thalys trains from Nord at 18:25 and some slower, more complicated (and thus cheaper) options available, so I wouldn’t worry too much about getting a reservation on this specific train.
