Mighty tempting, Don.
Especially that Virgin flight out of Orlando.

Remember… you might do better with BookingBuddy.com for specific dates — always pays to be flexible and shop around. Use ITA month-long search to sniff out trends and cheaper dates, then BB to nail it down.

Also remember… better sales might come along, so keep shopping, or sign up for alerts at Farecompare.com. Fuel surcharges likely will not be dropping (much, overall), in my opinion.

O’hare-Zurich $681 AA
JFK-BLL (Billund, Denmark) $698 KLM*
Newark-Dusseldorf $532 Lufthansa
Newark-Gothenburg $766 Continental/SAS
JFK-SVG (Stavanger, Norway) $780 KLM

  • I know Billund seems random—and it is—but I search random cities sometimes just to see what comes up. BSL, SXB, LUX, SVG, SKG, SVQ for example, don’t have transoceanic nonstop flight service, but sometimes have competive fares on connection—as we see with KLM offering little Billund, Denmark with a connection at Amsterdam. (Billund is in fact DK’s second busiest commercial airport in passenger numbers, but dwarfed by CPH which is the busiest among all Scandinavian airports).

I found $754 for SFO-CDG, FRA-SFO for the dates my wife and I want, but it only gives us an hour to make our connection in Cincinnati on the return leg of our flight. I have serious doubts about being able to get off the plane, clear customs, recheck bag, go through security again, and possibly change terminals in an hour.

Augustin — if it’s all on 1 ticket or PNR (booking code), or if the 2 airlines at least have an interline (baggage) agreement, then you won’t have to re-check bags—just drop them off after customs at baggage transfer. CVG is big, but not huge, but only 1 hour is pushing it. Did you check to see if ITA can find you a connection with more time?

Good point about the baggage thing, Don. It looks like that fare is gone and there isn’t anything super cheap for our dates. We’re probably going to change the itinerary a little and spend an extra $200 each to fly United/Lufthansa SFO-LON, FRA-SFO. That will put us well over the top in terms of miles to fly free for our trip to South America next year, and allow us to get non-stop flights both ways. The non-stop thing is nice because my wife and I don’t travel well together – the fewer stops/hassles the better Wink

Those were the good old days.
I’m just glad I was able to take advantage back then.
Still dreaming of a cheapo JAX>CDG fare, but I’ve got realistic expectations.Wink

Tell me about it. Pundits are saying that prices will close to double next summer. I wonder if there’s any solution to this other than some major technological advancement.

Nice…

Did you find anything out of Denver to London or Rome? Athens maybe? I’m indecisive…

I do check Denver when I check by groups of 5-6 airports, but it hardly ever comes up cheaper, which is why I haven’t mentioned them (much). You can easily check it out for the cities you need:

ITA month-long search

For example, the week just before and after Christmas, ITA shows cheapest for cities you mentioned $791 to Heathrow and back from Rome, if you make your own transfer between JFK and Newark coming back.

X-ref with BookingBuddy and other strategies in our new user thread (top of this forum).

- Using the month long search on ITA I see a few dates with sub $800 fares from LAX using various combos of TXL, CGN; & DUS (some open jaw, some round-trip), and from SFO using LON, CGN & MUC.
Putting in some specific dates I was searching for myself recently I found: – $696 LAX-LHR, FRA-LAX 12/22-12/30
-$669 SFO-LHR, FRA-SFO 12/23-12/31

Maybe I should just move to LA or New York…it would be easier and cheaper.

I’ll keep checking ITA and others – thanks.

Once my in-laws decided to go with us I gave up on cheap and went for convenience, and we’re flying during the most expensive period anyway. I ended up booking us LAX-CDG with a stop at LHR for $1100 on British Airways.
